Owners of the Nexus 6 have been watching cautiously to see how long Google is going to continue to support the device now that it is in the window for Google to decide to let it go by the wayside. Those same owners may be particularly tense given the Nexus 6 is currently the oldest device in the stable still getting updates after Google decided to not push out an update to Android 7.0 for the Nexus 5. Some good news surfaced today for Nexus 6 owners as their patience will be rewarded with an update to Android 7.1.1.
Things have not been completely terrible on the update front for the Nexus 6 as Google did provide Android 7.0. However, the device was skipped when Android 7.1.0 was released. That meant owners did not get access to features like app shortcuts, keyboard image insertion and some others. The situation should be remedied shortly though according to a Google spokesperson.
In a statement obtained today, Google says they were close to ready with the update to Android 7.1.1 already, but
“we found a last minute bug that was specific to the Nexus 6, which has caused the delay of the 7.1.1 OTA rollout. We've since fixed the issue and will be rolling out an update in early January.”
Once that update hits devices, owners will have to start worrying all over though as the odds will continue to increase on Google ending official support via updates for the Nexus 6. Android 7.1.1 could be the end of the road as far as Android versions goes for the Nexus 6.
