Pokémon Go may have just launched in July, to much success, but Niantic's leadership team is already looking ahead to how they can add to the title to keep players and fans engaged. In a new interview, Niantic CEO John Hanke discussed some of the ideas, including some concepts the team may bring over from their Ingress title.
If you have been to a park or other popular public place recently, you have no doubt seen hordes of people playing Pokémon Go. One of the concepts that Niantic is working on is to make this a bit more organized via “events” in which players show up at a given place at a given time to enjoy the game. Events have proven to be a popular aspect to the Ingress experience.
Besides the opportunity to get together with fellow Pokémon Go players, in-person events may be a way for new, rare Pokémon to be introduced to the game's universe. Hanke noted that one challenge may be ensuring event organizers are prepared to handle the crush of players who would likely show up.
While in-person events might be a crossover from another contemporary Niantic title, some of the other ideas being considered come from the classic Pokémon games. These include the ability to trade Pokémon with friends and the ability to engage in player-versus-player battles.
