t-mobile_magenta_lit_signPicking a data plan is tricky, especially if you need lots of data for videos or photos. T-Mobile is trying to take some of the pain out of that with their brand new Smart Fit plans.

The concept is pretty simple, and works almost like test driving a car. For $65 per month, you'll get unlimited talk, text, and data, plus 14 GB of hotspot data. You'll then use the phone normally for 30 days, and after the first month, the carrier will recommend a data plan for you. It defaults to the 6 GB plan that's also $65, but if you use less data than that, they'll recommend a lower tiered plan. If you need more data, it will recommend a higher plan. Simple, right?

There are only a few catches that really shouldn't hassle many people. If you switch plans halfway through your first 30 days, you lose the unlimited data and won't get a plan recommendation, which makes sense. It's also only available for new customers.

This is an innovative way to ease customers into an appropriate plan and should help avoid some of the nervousness that comes with worrying about whether or not you picked enough data and if your first month's bill is going to come loaded with tons of overages. You technically can't get billed for any overages on this Simple Fit plan, since it's unlimited for the first 30 days.

And if you really do need a ton of data, T-Mobile still offers a $95 unlimited plan. That's way better than a $200 bill because you picked the wrong plan.
