With the release of the new Motorola Moto X 2014, Motorola seems to be trying to narrow the gap a bit between the specs for their flagship device and those from other companies. Motorola has insisted in the past that consumers should look beyond the specs to actual features and functionality, especially things like Moto Display that change the way the device is used. In some areas though, hardware is hardware and skimping on it can create problems. Motorola may have learned that lesson with the camera in last year's Moto X and has tried to step up with something a little better for the latest version of the Moto X.

For the new Moto X 2014, Motorola changed suppliers for their camera sensors. In the past, including last year's model, Motorola used sensors from OmniVision. Last year's model included a 10MP sensor with a f/2.4 lens. In the background, last year's model used a new color filter that replaced a green pixel with a clear pixel in an effort to improve low light captures. However, this did not work nearly as well as hoped and led to disappointment for many users of the Moto X.

This year Motorola has switched to Sony as the supplier for their camera sensor, implementing a 13MP Sony IMX135 sensor with an f/2.25 aperture lens. This sensor is the same one used in the LG G3, LG G2, and Samsung Galaxy S4. Along with the upgraded sensor, Motorola also developed a dual LED flash that lives in a ring-shaped diffusing glass that surrounds the camera lens. The idea is that this will provide a softer light.

The true test will come once buyers start to get the new Moto X 2014 in their hands and put them to use in the wide variety of situations they find themselves. Do you think Motorola will be able to avoid the disappointment that has traditionally accompanied their devices when it comes to camera performance?
