Unless you have been living under a rock or hiking in a no service area, you are no doubt aware Nokia is expected to announce a new, low-end smartphone powered by Android next week at MWC 2014. Even Nokia appears to have abandoned all pretense at subtlety with their announcement about the time and date of a live webcast and conference from Barcelona. Up to now though, all of the leaked images of the Nokia X have been press renderings. We have also seen a picture, with associated exif data, taken with the Nokia X. A new wrinkle has surfaced from Chinese web site Coolxap in the form of pictures of the device.

One thing that is immediately noticeable is the user interface, strongly influenced by the Windows Phone design that had been rumored. It is still unclear at this time whether Nokia has forked Android, similar to Amazon, or if the interface is just an additional layer on top of Android similar to TouchWiz or Sense. We only have a few more days before these details and others are revealed during MWC2014.

  1. Although “It is still unclear at this time whether Nokia has forked Android, similar to Amazon,” that doesn’t stop apps compilied for Kitkat from running on those so-called forked systems. What’s so bad if they have something different than gmail or the Playstore???
