Android_Gallery_Photos_Could_Merge

The fact that there is both a Photos app and a Gallery app is a tad confusing, and it looks like Google might be getting ready to ditch the Gallery app all together. Ever since the beginning of Android there has always been an app called “Gallery”, which has been the home of all your images loaded on your device. Soon however, the Gallery app will be phased out completely, being replaced by Google+ Photos, or simply “Photos” as the app is called.

Evidence against the Gallery app is mounting, and a high resolution icon for the app was not even created for Android 4.4, even though most other apps did receive a shiny high res icon. Clearly Google would like as many people to migrate towards Google+ as possible, though you aren't required to create a Google+ account to use the app – it can handle both offline and online photos.

The next step for Google is to remove the Gallery app completely from Android, and it seems that it is only a matter of time before that happens. In fact, a recent minor update to the Gallery app even included files named “plus_editor”.

  1. how to turn off this google+ photos on my android? Lucky I do not have google+ account and hence fucking autosync properties but still, i dont want any of these features in the future either. I truly hate those applucagion which autosync everything i do without even asking… I already turned off picasa upploader, but cannot find this google+photos app

  2. The Google Photos app is an absolute mess. The interface is terrible.

The absolute awesome feature is great in principle, but it just doesn’t work well. If you start an Auto Awesome, then wait, then go somewhere else, then come back, where has it gone? who knows?

I’m sure the app will improve and eventually make sense, but they need to clean it up a bit first.

  3. i looked at this recently and thought it looked a bit crap. reading this article i went back to look again and its so lacking in features i cant see how google could in its current state replace the standard gallery with it. if they migrated over the features then fair enough then i can understand them doing it. wonder how it will pan out

  4. Why would they remove gallery and keep photos? Cos photos go in a gallery, but not all images are photos.

They should have just improved Gallery and skipped this all in the first place.

      1. No it isn’t.

Gallery is an Android app – Google+ is a poor attempt at harvesting user data under the thin veil of being a social network.

      2. I have a google account, but not google+ account and never will be! altought it always ask me to do g+ plus account to get everything or more likely google wants to get all. no thanks… i dont have needs to share my whole life… “everybody can be famous nowadays, share your life even when youre sitting on the toilet and get face to internet, be the first one, do that and get everything…” blaa blaa blaaaaaaa!

    1. Hey there – My Picasa photos are showing up, all of the folders are there. There is just no icon showing that it is from Picasa. Hmm.

    1. The photo’s app is much nicer. This only really affects Nexus devices too since a lot of OEMs bundle their own gallery app. My Z ultra has this new Photos app and sony’s Album app.

    2. As opposed to Samsung which shoves several gigabytes of bloatware down your throat with absolutely no way to remove any of it. As opposed to Samsung “telling the masses” that they need a bloated phone full of “features” that most people don’t use on even a weekly basis, let alone know exist. What a joke.

      1. do some research dude – that way you wont look so daft.

Root + Sytemapp Remover (it’s on the Play store) allows you to get rid of any app you like – including those that are (unsurprisingly) loaded as system apps.

        1. Try using a bit of common sense “dude”.
          1. Root isn’t an option, or even a thought, for the vast majority of Android users.
          2. You don’t need “Systemapp Remover”. All you need is a root capable file browser, or if you’re old school, a terminal emulator, to delete those system apps. Heck, it can also be done over ADB.
          3. I imagine some of the bloatware that I’m talking about is built into the OS itself, and not some trivial .apk under /system/app. Then again, I don’t have a device with Touchwiz/Nature UI on it, so I don’t know for sure.

          1. So you were only speculating about something you’re not really sure about?

Well, I am using a Sammy running Touchwiz, and I can happily confirm to you that you can indeed remove practically all of the bloat by deleting apk’s.

But to do it with a root browser you’d need root in order for the browser to have r/w access to system/apps as just being able to browse it is pretty useless.

            1. Methinks you should to look up the definition of “speculation”. You would surely answer your own question.

Notice, I didn’t say that you didn’t need root. I said you didn’t need that specific app. There’s a difference. Learn to read. I didn’t include the need for root itself because I thought that was self-explanitory/stupidly obvious. Apparently I was mistaken.
