Competition causes companies to constantly raise the bar, which turns out to be a big benefit for consumers. Another side-effect that is produced is the occasional sniping that companies will take at each other, always entertaining in this age of connected technology. The latest example involves Qualcomm and MediaTek, both working to gain your business via smartphone and tablet device manufacturers' choices for their mobile processors. Qualcomm has produced a video now available on YouTube that takes some shots at MediaTek's plans to produce a true eight-core processor before the end of 2013.
Qualcomm's points mainly focus on the cores in their processors being better quality and able to process faster. In comparison, they claim MediaTek is doing nothing but duplicating the “same old cores” based on ARM Cortex-A7 architecture. Even worse, using a Guitar Hero type sequence, Qualcomm claims most apps only use two cores at most, which means all the extra MediaTek cores are sitting idle and don't add anything to the user's experience. As a final dig, Qualcomm mentions their chips come with several other dedicated processors built-in, like the GPU, LTE, and camera circuitry.
Sources indicate MediaTek has no comment regarding the video. Hopefully we'll see a response at some point. Check out the video below.
