We’ve already shown you the promotional video for AT&T’s Samsung Captivate, which is scheduled to be released on July 18th, for $199, but we’ve got one early and are going to do a little unboxing and give you our first impressions.

It comes packaged in a very sturdy box, short of running it over, I don’t think you’d damage the phone if you dropped it in your excitement when running out of the AT&T store on the 18th.

Once you open the box you’re greeted with a friendly message from AT&T thanking you for purchasing your new Captivate. (Which they point out is a Galaxy S phone)

Once you remove the little pamphlet you’ll find you’re pride and joy staring back at you.

Once you get everything unpacked you’ll find the above accessories. You have a mini-USB cable, an AC adapter and a set of earbud headphones that come with three different-sized inserts to fit a wide range of ears.

I haven’t said it yet, but this is one, sexy, phone. Everything from the feel of the phone to the build quality make me want to keep holding onto it.

The back of the phone is just as sexy as the front. The textured back panel is actually metal and feels soft, almost fabric like in your hand due to how it was machined.

Now to give you an idea of the physical size of the phone, here are a few pictures of it compared to my Nexus One:

You know it’s funny. I would’ve never thought that .3 inches would make a difference for screen size, but that extra little bit really is nice. After using the phone for a little while now, I definitely prefer the software keyboard on the Captivate to the Nexus One. I don’t know if it’s the larger screen, different keyboard, or maybe a more responsive touch screen, but I’ll explore that in my full review. Anyway back to the comparison pics:

On this pic it looks like the rear panel on the Captivate isn’t flush with the phone itself. I can assure you that it’s just due to the lighting/shadows and that the fit and finish on the Captivate is perfect.

It’s hard to see in the picture above, but there is a tiny sliding door on the Captivate to access the mini-USB connection. Once the full review is up, I’ll show this in more detail.
Now as for the phone itself, fast is the only word to describe it. I haven’t put it through any benchmarks yet or anything but it definitely feels “snappier” than my Nexus. Scrolling between apps is silky smooth as is scrolling through webpages. I also have to add that the visual modifications that Samsung has done to Android 2.1 look pretty good on this phone. It will be interesting to see how Froyo looks on this bad boy.
So really, that’s it for now, we just wanted to give you a little sneak peak of the phone and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for our review in the coming week.
