HTC Desire will not get Gingerbread due to lack of memory

HTC has done a decent job with updates, but for those that own the HTC Desire, we have some bad news. Unfortunately there is not enough memory to update it to Gingerbread.

Here is was HTC UK said on their Facebook page:

Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.

You have to wonder if this would be an issue if Sense were not installed. We all know that Sense is HTC’s baby so that is not going anywhere anytime soon. At least there is still the option for rooting and custom ROMs.

Okay, that really pisses me off since htc kinda promised..

a good reason to consider to boycott htc in the future, maybe the only real good choice is to get a nexus, sorry htc :(

512mb of storage? is anyone really surprised by this? your only hope is that dev who figures out a way to get it to install to the SD.

The problem is the desires ram. Its insufficient. It can run gingerbread and sense but there wouldn’t be enough ram left over for other processes. Why can’t they just give us vanilla gingerbread? Either way they are full of it. They did promise. And they didn’t deliver. Gonna wait another year and just buy a Samsung phone. Screw HTC!

  • Balzaak

@thatss it has 512mb of ram, the exact same amount my Droid X has, which BTW is running gingerbread

  • thatss

Yeah, but ur Droid x doesn’t have HTC nonSENSE lol. That’s why the ram isn’t enough. The stupid sense overlay. Well, I’m gonna use CM 7. Its a really good Tom.

    *goes to install Ledroid Gingersense*

Funny how these devs can get it working, but HTC can’t. I’ve been running Gingersense for a few months now and its stable.

Oxygen rom works fine if you want gingerbread

Very Very Disappointed with the news…. I have been waiting for a long time for my Desire to get the Gingerbread… and now they tell us this.

My friend who owns a nexus one (despite having no HTC Sense) has gingerbread.

With this news.. HTC doesn’t have ANY SENSE at all.

    Boo!!!

There are so many Gingerbread + Sense roms around it’s not funny, including your pick of which version of sense you use – v.2 or v.3.

HTC it would make sense to put more work into making Sense less resource hungry.

Anyway, some of the nonsense roms are way better. Just add a good dialer like Dialer One and a decent calendar like Business Calendar free, plus Fancy Widget for the clock and weather.

I’m really dissapointed with these news. I bought a Desire some months ago knowing it would be updated. People may expect Sense on HTC phones, but I believe Sense is more important to HTC than the consumers. I would much rather run a clean 2.3 instead of keeping 2.2 with Sense. I will have to look into this, although I don’t know anything about rooting or installing custom mods. Really dissapointed, HTC.

I knew it, !! that’s way I’ve got an iPhone 4 … done the jailbreak, unlocked et voila’ the best phone ever…it’s another planet…Anyway my girlfriend has the Desire, we compared both devices…no chance for Htc… the iPhone 4 wins in all departments and believe me with the jailbreak it’s a fantastic machine, forget the android root it’s so 2005… lower then windows mobile. Don’t get me wrong I still love android but iOS + jailbreak it’s superiour…and the iPhone 5 is just right the corner. Ciao!

I can understand that HTC are not able to provide a user-friendly and failsafe way of installing this, but we know the community have already made this work quite well for experienced users with apps2sd and so on. I really think HTC should provide those modders with what they need in order to get this running 100% so that at least there is one group of users that can enjoy this on their Desire – the ones who are not afraid of bricking their phone.

  • HTC Desire (rooted) owner

Install CyanogenMod 7 – enjoy Android Gingerbread

ps. HTC phones kinda suck… Having only 128 – couple MB of internal memory. This is the main disadvantage – never ending struggle for application space.

It’s amazing to me that a “reputable ” company can flat-out lie to you. When I purchased my desire, they promised an upgrade was coming.

    Shame… shame… shame!

I bought my Desire 3 months ago on the premise that it was affordable and would be updated to Gingerbread. I am so disappointed.
I would root my phone but I am scared of bricking it and find the instructions too confusing to be confident of success. Now what do I do?

Well apparently HTC backpedaled. They announced that they will bring Gingerbread to the desire now. Lol. When? Who knows. Think of this, the HTC wildfire S has the same amount of rom memory as the desire and less Ram than the desire, yet it gets gingerbread with sense 2.1. I think HTC believed they could get away with leaving us in the dark and came up with this BS about memory cuz that would make us want to upgrade phones. Sneaky sneaky!!
