As more and more complicated services and information is accessed through web sites, you have probably noticed that some of the URLs have become unbelievably long and complicated. This can be due to the code used to get a page to display just right or for other things like tracking and referral information. Often when you need to share a URL with someone else, all of that extra stuff may not be needed. Perhaps taking a hint from some of their other services like Google Maps that has an option for a shortened URL, the Chrome browser on Android will now clean up URLs automatically when the share feature is used.

The new ability to automatically clean up URLs is present in v64 of the Chrome browser which has started rolling out to users. Sources think part of this change might be tied in with Google's effort to support canonical page URLs as well as their initiative to expand support for AMP pages in apps like the Gmail client.

To use the new URL cleanup feature, users have to use the Share option in the Chrome menu. The new URL will automatically populate into the chosen app for sharing or it can be copied to the clipboard to be manually pasted. If for some reason you do not like apps taking it upon themselves to make changes like this, you can highlight and select the URL in the address then copy it. That will preserve the entire URL, which could be useful if you need to save something like page anchor information which happens to be a bit Chrome will strip out.
