MHL is a fairly new standard for video cabling with mobile devices, but Samsung is one of the supporting manufacturers and has included this capability in the Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone. MHL stands for “mobile high-definition video link”, and basically works by using the microUSB port to transfer HD video directly to the HDMI input on a video display device or TV. This eliminates the need to bulk up the handset design by having an extra microHDMI output into the casing, making it easier to keep devices small and thin.
The port would require a special cable, male microUSB to male HDMI, which will be able to charge your handset when connected, but only on newer TV’s that support MHL functionality. Until then, be mindfull of how much video you’re pushing to your TV, cause it’ll kill your battery in no time right now.
Here’s a video on MHL and its uses.
