Well if you don’t think so… Samsung does. If you watched Steve Jobs’ keynote speech when he was talking about the new iPhone, he touted the screen on the new iPhone was better than anything currently on the market, including OLEDs. “You can’t make an OLED display with this type of resolution right now. Well apparently Samsung, the worlds largest display maker wasn’t going to let that jab slide.
A spokesperson for Samsung said that the Retina display in the iPhone 4 does in fact offer a higher resolution than the Samsung Galaxy S, but it also consumes about 30% more power than the “Super AM-OLED” first used in its own Galaxy S. “The visibility difference is only 3 to 5%, but raising resolution increases battery consumption by 30%.” said the spokesperson. The spokesperson also has said that there are several other factors besides resolution that determine picture quality, and AM-OLED display outdoes the Retina in contrast ratio, color reproduction as well as response time. The spokesperson also said “Structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AM-OLED display techonology.” and that “the LCD based on IPS technology boasts a wide viewing angle of 80%, but AM-OLED offers a “free” viewing angle.”
Of course it’s kind of hard for any 3rd parties to verify any of this, considering that the Galaxy S hasn’t made it into anyones hands yet.
