Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept getting Android 2.2 in Spring 2011

vmfroyointercept

Looks like Virgin Mobile is getting the Samsung Intercept some Froyo treats this Spring 2011, and Intercept owners should be happy. Virgin Mobile just got the Samsung Intercept last October 2010, so 3 months to jump on Froyo is pretty fast compared to other carriers with Android devices. The update should be OTA, and you should receive a notification that the update is available when it’s ready.

Go Branson!

so i can buy the intercept right now and wen the update is readt, it will update on its own?

  • Petro

Yes, it will tell you that the update is ready for download in the notification bar. Then you have the choice to download it or not.

  • Bill S.

Oh that’s good news. Thank you Virgin!

Virgin Mobile USA confirmed the upgrade on twitter with post:

@islandboy4lyfe Yes – the update will be coming this Spring – stay tuned for more specific details.

Virgin Mobile USA is pushing back the Android 2.2 (FroYo) upgrade to first week of April 2011.

Here is from their Twitter Account:

@NG_Player I’m sorry, the update is being rescheduled due to some internal timing issues. It should be ready the first week of April.

The update is being rescheduled due to some internal timing issue. We expect it will be ready by April 4th.

I read on different websites, that it is being pushed back to the end of the month now.

We were supposed to have it in January shortly after Sprint, and now it’s been pushed back three times since, always on the release date. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next announcement pushes it back to “sometime this summer”, or cancels the update completely – really, I don’t know what the holdup or issue is at this point but I don’t have my hopes up anymore.

I might just grab an Optimus V and sell my intercept on ebay, hear its faster and all around a better phone. I love VM as a carrier, but their customer support is horrible.

    From Facebook VirginMobileUSA post:

Hello Freddy, we do NOT have an exact date we are pushing for the end of the month.

    On Twitter:

@LucasHughes13 The updated has been rescheduled to be released later in month of April due to issues we encountered during testing.

Be patient people. I don’t want to end up with a brick for a phone like a lot of Sprint customers ended up with after their Intercepts were updated to 2.2. Let Android and VM work out the bugs before they send it to us. It will come. Be patient. As far as the Optimus V being faster… the reason it is faster is because it has Android 2.2. It actually has a slower processor inside. Your intercept will speed up once it recieves the update.

I just got the following text from VM.
“VMFreeMsg: Starting 4/11/11, you will be notified of a phone software upgrade available for your Intercept. Click http://msg4u.us/isr for more information.” Bout time!

Everyone is expecting a perfect release on 4/11/2011. Virgin Mobile USA and Sprint probably tested Froyo extensively. Here is one email to a customer:

Thanks for contacting Virgin Mobile Customer Care.

Due to an unusual high volume of emails recently, it has taken us longer than expected to respond to your email. We are very sorry for the delay in responding back and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Virgin Mobile customers using a Samsung Intercept will receive a text message advising of an upcoming handset software update. Virgin Mobile will offer a software update for the Samsung Intercept which will update the device software from Android 2.1 Eclair to Android 2.2 Froyo. Not all Intercept customers will receive the software update at the same time. The initial software update push will be to 5,000 Intercept users starting April 11th. Further deployments of the software update will be pushed out as testing is confirmed.

NOTE: Customers who manually look for a software update will not find an available update until after the date they are scheduled for the software push. This update will be available for manual updates to all subscribers after all software pushes have been deployed.

If you need additional assistance, feel free to let us know how we can assist further or contact us at 1-888-322-1122 (or *VM from your handset). You can reach us Monday through Sunday from 4am-9pm PST.

    Thanks,

  • Kil

I received the notification this morning and preceded to install, but it froze in the midst of it. It showed me a picture of the android and a warning sign. I took out the battery after an hour of waiting and it prompted me to reboot my system. Anyone else having this issue?

  • james scanapico

Did froyo update on intercept know my search icon no longer works I have to use the web button on home screen now to do a quick search & home icon no longer works u have to use the one on your home screen instead does anyone know if there’s afix to that or was that intended in the update???

  • Linda Brown

I installed the upgrade. On the old one, I could pull down a screen and turn on the bluetooth or wi-fi from the pull down screen. This option does not seem to exist on the upgrade. Can someone tell me if this can be installed? Or do I have to go into the phone and turn on bluetooth from there?

  • Deb Lind

I installed the update and now my Outlook calendar at work no longer syncs correctly. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. More no than yes. This is one of the main reasons I chose the Intercept. I use Virgin Mobile. Is there any kind of fix?

    Thanks

  • Dan

I just worked out how to get the update – I’ve been waiting with no joy. Just factory reset the Intercept, then 10 mins later it will upgrade to 2.2.2 – much better once installed.

I am cancelling my Virgin mobile phone as of sept. 15. I am now on a different provider on the family plan. Thank you for your years of service.
