Acer D255 Netbook Seen Running Android OS!

Android on Acer D255

The PC market is in trouble with the onslaught on tablets gaining popularity. How do you battle smartphones and tablets in sales? You install a mobile OS on a PC, in particular, if you’ want to make a good run at increasing your PC sales, you install the most popular mobile OS available…Android.

Here you see an Acer D255 netbook running Android. It looks like it’s Android 1.6, but we can’t be sure as they may have had to alter many areas of code to get it running on something that doesn’t have a touchscreen to begin with.

I don’t mind netbooks, they’re a lot more powerful than any tablet or smartphone currently, and I like having a physical qwerty keyboard too. It would be interesting to see if PC manufacturers decide to release Android on netbooks for sale. The benefits are the same that Google discussed when Chrome OS was first announced to the public.

Would you grab a netbook running Android instead of a tablet?

Writing this on an Asus EEEPC 900 running Android-x86 as a live boot from a USB drive – it works though the UI is taking a bit to get used to without a touchscreen. Very Nice.

I have an acer aspire one D255, which dual boots into Android 2.1. It runs smoothly, but the main problem is that there is no access to the android market, meaning I cannot install many apps. If anyone could possibly provide me with an .apk link or some other solution I would greatly appreciate it :D
