Back before my experience with Ice Cream Sandwich and the amazing launchers like Apex or Nova I found a constant need for finding a perfect launcher that fit both my need for functionality and my need for it to be polished as well. You know, one that was fancy but fit my needs for daily use without lag. Well when I first saw the preview for TSF Launcher and its functionality I became quite excited as I felt this would possibly fit the bill.
Well when the launcher became live I went to the Android Market now turned Google Play Store to download it. I gawked at the $17 price tag but made the purchase thinking I would play with it for a few minutes and then return it in the 15 minute refund window. Well as I got to playing with it I decided that I’d keep it and write up a review for you guys so that you didn't have to go in blind in purchasing this.
In order to get a good feel for the launcher and how it worked I dedicated 10 days to it because honestly I feel that you can’t get a good feel out of a launcher or an app until you’ve used it consistently for a period of time. While apps may take less time, a launcher is something you use everyday so it requires some extra attention. So here it is in all its glory; ten days with the TSF launcher, my hands on review.
The Good
This is by far the most original launcher I have ever used. The doodads and widgets that come with, but as separate downloads, add some much needed polish and functionality to your homescreens. The weather widget is just a touch of different and I like the feel. The music widget adds music functionality at the touch of your fingers and I do have to say that I like the “Sticky Note” widget function for quick reminders and notes. In the time I’ve used it we’ve had an update that fixed the force closes and glitches I was having and I have yet to see a force close since so I won't complain about that.
The update also added some toggle widgets that range from Wifi to Airplane Mode with Sound, Help and others in between. Another toggle they have is one that changes the density or size of everything. This means that you can effectively put a whole bunch of stuff on one page. The only downside to this is that all your apps look tiny and cluttered (see below).
Transitions between the homescreens took a bit to get used to in that you had to hit the bottom left corner of the screen (see below) to access the ability to move between the 4 home screens and “app drawer.” At first I found myself trying to swipe left or right to access my other homescreens and became frustrated when nothing happened. At least that was until I remembered how to access everything.
Once I got used to that I was moving between homescreens with ease. Everything felt smooth and that could be the hardware in my Galaxy Nexus making this launcher shine. I had no lag whatsoever moving through the launcher. It was after that though that I started noticing the shortcomings.
The Shortcomings
Okay let’s just get this out of the way right in the beginning. $17 dollars is a steep price to pay for an app. This is in part to the app pricing set up that is already established making high end apps close to $5. Now that doesn’t mean I won’t pay the price for a good product or an app that's worth it but with all the hype and the preview videos I must have read or watched a dozen times, I expected more. For the most part though it’s because of the price that these shortcomings become so prevalent.
This whole launcher felt as if it were a beta app. When I tried to replicate some of the features I kept getting an error or nothing happened at all. For example I tried the replicate the lasso effect in various areas and I kept getting the pop up “This function is not available in the current version,” (see below). When I pay 17 dollars for an app I don’t want to be told to expect a feature in a later update or that it's not available now.
I can look past that but the one thing that I cannot look past in a custom launcher is a lack of scrolling widget support. Most launchers like Go Launcher or ADW Launcher, heck any of the launchers I’ve ever used, have this built in. To not have it at all is ridiculous. I use scrollable widgets all the time between my Gmail, Twitter and Reader apps andI felt stunted at not being able to do so. It seriously hindered my ability to look at look at social updates, news items and my voicemail at a glimpse.
One last gripe I have is the process to set up folders. Rather than drag and drop and have the folder automatically created you have to pull a folder from the side-loaded menu then go to the “app drawer” and pull apps from there. I was able to get the lasso to work just right to select multiple apps every once in a while but I had to be exact about it and it was seldom quick to do. But that really is a personal gripe about it being a tedious process.
The Conclusion
After using this for the past ten days it felt lacking. I expected to be able to write tons about how glorious and epic this launcher is. Sadly though I couldn't because it’s not epic… yet. It will get better in time I assume and my gripes may go away at that point but when I spend 17 dollars on an app I expect it to be finished, polished or damn close to. It could be that I have been spoiled by Ice Cream Sandwich and that I am unfairly comparing this to that but let’s face it, given that Android 4.0 is the cream of the crop the comparison needs to be made. This launcher from time to time just felt like yet another launcher without any distinguishing factors.
For those of you that are missing out on Android 4.0 though, I would say that this would be a good launcher for you for functionality and folder support plus the polish that is there. However I honestly have no idea how this will function on lower end devices. Like I said, I found no issues on my dual-core phone. The lack of scrolling widgets and missing features is a deal breaker for me for the price though. If the launcher were cheaper I wouldn’t mind so much. You could get similar functionality from much cheaper launcher options and various folder apps and you'll get scrollable widgets to boot!
I want to very much recommend this launcher but I just can't for the price. The polish it has doesn’t outweigh its lack of functionality. As this gets updated that may change but until then I will recommend going with a different, less costly route. $17 is just too much for TSF as of right now and the potential it has doesn’t justify dropping that kind of dough on it; not for what it’s missing.
This is the best launcher out there. It’s free now, the lasso mode works, it’s easy to use, and it runs perfectly.
I’m using it on my 8 core Note 3 and it works well. Don’t know about dual cores though :P Funny how fast technology evolves.. Anyway, I’ve been using it for a few days now.
Not worth the price.. but I’d like to mention that I didn’t face any lags or nothin… all animations turned on.. and set to 1.5x speed from the dev setting ;-) feels so smooth on kitkat.. plus its wayy better than touchwiz.. much more polished now..

the worst launcher I’ve seen :/ it has countless lacks of functionalty :/ suppose its free even then its not worth it
I agree that they should let people try before they buy it, but if you think about it there’s probably a reason they don’t. If they let people try it and see how unfinished it is, they wouldn’t buy it, but if they make you buy it first they can count on most people going through that 15 minute return period trying out, then not having time to return it. Google needs to get rid of their absurd 15 minute return policy. There was nothing wrong with the 24 policy like it used to be.
I too bought it & am now regretting it. The latest version allows you to freely scroll between screens, even looping from the last to the first if you choose. The annoying things like the way you create a folder still exist though. Also, for me at least it has to reload every time I leave an app to go back to the homescreen. That annoys me more than anything. I have a samsung stratosphere, which isn’t a high-end phone, but it’s not exactly a droid eris either. I’m rarely able to add a widget because it usually force closes before it’s added to the screen. I almost never have these problems with launchers because if they do I uninstall them immediately, then again I’ve never spent such an outrageous price for any other launcher. Jack (the reviewer) hit the nail on the head:”The polish it has doesn’t outweigh its lack of functionality”. It has some advanced features, but performance-wise it’s beta at best. Hopefully they won’t make the same mistake as the Go Launcher developers and keep adding features instead of focusing on performance.

I have ADW Launcher and Launcher Pro on my Acer Iconia A500 tablet and ultimately settled on Launcher Pro. After upgrade to ICS, I tried the standard ICS Launcher, but eventually went back to Launcher Pro for its power and simplicity. On my cellphone, I use Launcher 7 because even though I’m an ardent Android supporter, I like the larger tile concept of Windows 7 Phone. I travel a great deal and having the large tiles is much easier to select the programs I use often while walking through the airport, etc. If Launcher 7 was compatible with my Acer tablet, I’d probably use it there also.
I haven’t used a custom launcher since I first took my Galaxy Nexus out of the box a couple of months ago… ICS is just smooth as hell. For those who want 129579127512957 extra features, be prepared to pay ridiculous prices (17$??) and/or have a laggy experience. ICS is just way too smooth to even bother trying another launcher (I was a very happy LauncherPro customer on my Nexus One…)
If you want a cool widget for weather/time/on-off controls, get HD Widgets (it was 99 cents at some point… sucks if you didn’t snatch it!)
I bought this and liked it for awhile, that was until I tried SPB Shell. It is a totally better experience. It has so much more to offer. It to was a little pricey but I was sold within the 15 minute return time. Also, I don’t know if this is even possible, but it seems as if it has extended my battery. No joke I’m used to plugging my phone in by 5 after a medium workload day. Ice been rocking heavy use all day and I’m barely @ 50%. I’ve been streaming music from google music all day as well as playing with SPB and trying to get it all laid out.
Price isn’t so much my gripe, though I did find it a bit pricey. I have an Evo 4G and it runs super smooth on it, no lag at all. What I have problems with is the quick launcher on the left side doesn’t work, the icons are there but they do not function. Also I have a major gripe with the fact I cannot remove widgets off of the screen. I’m so used to being able to press and hold them then select remove or just dragging them away. I cannot do that here on this one, it 98% of the time does not work at all.
Now to be fair I am running ICS on my Evo. There could be issues with it behaving with that type of ROM on the device. But none of the other launchers have these issues and I’m constantly trying them out. I found I couldn’t get rid of those Props either once they were put on the screen. So I uninstalled and reinstalled it to get rid of them. They have since fixed several issues, but none of the ones I’ve mentioned here have been touched.
As with others that have posted, the folder size limitation and no scrolling widget support and also the fact that I cannot read their support response emails as they come back in all Asian text, it’s pointless for me to send them in reports it seems. I can’t tell anything about what they’re working on fixing next and it’s rather frustrating in that area.
When they get these issues dealt with, add in a few things as well like a “Settings” section so that you can have more control over how it behaves ( Like adding more windows if that’s what you need ), then I’ll change my rating of 3 stars on Play.
I have go launcher on my gs2 skyrocket with the blue go theme for the past 3 months and I love it and would Never switch to anything else . Its everything I need and more!! And it was all Free
I felt it was false advertising. The video shows features that are not implemented, and yet there is no mention of this in the description. Folders are also limited to 12 items which is useless to me after ADW allowing scrollable folder windows. Scrolling widget support is needed. Despite this, I keep it as a shortcut and play with it every now and again (but don’t use it as my main lancher), because it is unique, and smooth and if it is improved, my current feelings of being ripped off could quickly disipate.
I also was a sucker who purchased this launcher after watching the videos and reading the reviews. I tried using this launcher for one day and finally just gave up. As the reviewer pointed out, it’s just too difficult to use (creating folders, not being able to scroll between screens, non-scrollable widgets). The force closes I would get just pushed me over the edge into going back to ADW. The force closes may now be fixed with an update, but I will never know. I’m just going to wait and hold out for ICS on my Razr Maxx.
sorry for the spelling lol im just mad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go launcher is the best and its free. i have a rooted epic 4g touch and tsf launcher just is not worth that kindof money. mabe if they would let people try before buy.
and not all phones can get the widgets like the music and note. they are lying to coustomers
Hands down, its the smoothest launcher out. Works like iphone on my evo 4g. I’m using it going on 2 weeks now, and I agree with the majority of what the OP said. I think folder setup is actually easier than any other launcher besides stock ICS though. My consistent issues I have with this launcher are the lack of scrollable widgets, and disappearing apps in my folders. Very frustrating indeed. I don’t want to go back to my app drawer just to access certain apps that have been cleared from my app cache. The disappearing apps also affects how folders are accessed. Folders require at least 8 apps for it to allow you to string the apps along the screen in a “follow your finger” swipe from the folder. Its a feature I really looked forward too. Its the closest to WebOS’s wave launcher that I could find. When an app disappears though, this functionality disappears along with it. There really should be no limit on thag feature.
I’m close to going back to GO Launcher, but lag is the only reason I don’t. TSF has ZERO lag. Period. The downfall of this is that on an old device like mine, the launcher doesn’t stick in memory, so it reloads at times, often inconveniently, like when I’m trying to respond to a text.
I’ll be holding steady while updates keep coming. So far I’ve seen one each week. That’s good in my book. Just my two cents.

This is all true. Its really overpriced, I can’t be live they didn’t take the hint that SPB Shell was over priced. Also the lack of bieng able to swipe between screens is a huge let down. Apart from that its as smooth as go launcher or nova and looks amazing – Galaxy Nexus Sense 4.0 alpha port.
