Dark ModeWhen it comes to words overly used by tech sites to describe the eventual appearance of a long-awaited feature or device, the word ‘finally' is usually the word that comes to mind. Finally this, finally that. But, in this case, I feel entirely justified in saying that dark mode is finally rolling out to WhatsApp users everywhere without the need to be signed up to the beta program. If dark mode is what your WhatsApp experience has been missing, join us after the break to find out how to enable it on your smartphone or tablet.

Dark Mode

The advent of a dark mode on the regular version of the WhatsApp messaging app means that users no longer need to blind themselves when checking their messages when the light has been turned off. It's rolling out for users on both of the major mobile operating systems and you just need to be running Android 9 Pie or iOS 13 and above on your chosen device to take the strain off of your eyes.

You can choose to stick with the light theme, to move over to dark mode, or to have your system default determine whether it is time for light or dark mode depending on if you have scheduled your system to switch to dark mode and back at a certain time.

Switching on dark mode for WhatsApp is pretty simple, as you can see from the steps below:

  • Open up WhatsApp
  • Tap on the three dots in the right-hand corner of the screen and select Settings
  • Tap on Chats
  • Select Theme
  • Choose between the following options – System Default, Light, or Dark

You'll need to be running on the latest version of WhatsApp, so if the option to switch on dark mode is not yet present, it might be worth your while visiting the Play Store to check if the app needs updating. And that is that, you've saved your eyes with dark mode on your favorite messaging app. Don't forget to check out these essential WhatsApp tips here.
