The Material Design 3 update also includes more color options, panel sizing, and changes to the top app bar, left navigation, main message view, compose setup, new topic button, and the thread panel with direct messages and spaces.

The rollout of the Material Design 3 UI update should be completed within the next 15 days so don't fret if you don't see it immediately. It's a server-side switch which means that Google Chat admins need not worry about getting involved. Besides personal Google accounts, the update will also roll out to Workspace customers, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business users.
