Flash CyanogenMod 7 to Your Kindle Fire in 43 Easy Steps 5
The other day we told you about the CyanogenMod team bringing CM7 to the Kindle Fire. Well as of today you can too. However, this is a lengthy process (43 steps and use of ADB) and I suggest taking extreme caution by reading through the entire guide before you take on this task. According to the post, this is still an alpha build and some stuff doesn't work. We reported before that the wifi wasn't working, but both that and the touchscreen are working just fine. The sound and hardware acceleration aren't working however. According to the post:

“- First, this method will require some knowledge of ADB.
 – This version is very much an alpha build, and as such there are features that are not yet working, though most of the    important stuff is.
 – Wifi and touchscreen controls are reported to work just fine, however sound and hardware acceleration are not.
 – This has been tested with firmware versions 6.0 and 6.1, but not on 6.2.
 – In addition, there is no way (currently) to return to the stock software.
 – There are likely other issues as well, but if you're willing to test it then proceed.”

So, those of you that are interested in trying this out, I still, advise extreme caution in flashing this, and like with rooting and flashing on other devices, it does void your warranty. If you haven't rooted your Kindle Fire yet and want to, you can go here. There is no way to get back to the Stock software as of yet, so again, extreme caution advised, have I stressed this enough yet?

If this doesn't deter you from trying this out, hit the break below to download the files and for the install process. Those of you that successfully flash this, we would love to hear from you. How well does it work?

– The ROM Update File

– CWM Recovery for Amazon Kindle Fire

– Stock Recovery Image

– Log

– Last Log

The Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Make sure your device is rooted, fully charged, and that you have some experience with ADB.
  2. Make sure ADB recognizes your device before proceeding.
  3. Copy the CM7 update.zip file to the root of your SD card.
  4. Copy the updaterecovery.img file to the root of your SD card.
  5. Copy the log and last_log files to the root of your SD card
  6. Before proceeding, the developer recommends checking the MD5Sums of the files you downloaded. To do this, unmount your device from the PC with the following commands.
  7. Type adb shell
  8. Type cd sdcard
  9. Type md5sum update.zip
  10. Make sure the numbers displayed match those posted above.
  11. Type md5sum updaterecovery.img
  12. Make sure the numbers displayed match those posted above.
  13. If they do not match, don't proceed any further. The files may be corrupt.
  14. The log files you downloaded will now need to be placed under a /cache/recovery folder partition.
  15. Type adb shell
  16. Type cd cache
  17. Type mkdir recovery
  18. Type cd /
  19. Type cp /sdcard/log /cache/recovery
  20. Type cp /sdcard/last_log /cache/recovery
  21. If your file's MD5Sums check out, then you're ready to flash CWM Recovery.
  22. Type adb shell
  23. Type dd if=/sdcard/updaterecovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/mmci-omap-hs.1/by-name/recovery
  24. Reboot by typing idme bootmode 0x5001
  25. If it says the bootmode has written, then you can reboot by typing reboot
  26. The developer recommends that you do not unplug the USB link to your PC.
  27. You should now boot into Clockwork Recovery
  28. Check first at the bottom of the screen for any error messages, which should be displayed in white. If you see one that references something being read-only, you should be fine. If it gives you an error about log or last_log, then you may have missed a step above. If any error comes up, you may need to reflash CWM recovery.
  29. Navigating CWM will be a little more difficult. You should see that the “Install update.ZIP from SD Card” option has been moved to the top of the list. Click the power button to select this option and flash the ROM.
  30. The “Yes” option has also been moved to the top, so select it with the power button.
  31. Because you can't navigate to the mounts and storage options in CWM, the necessary steps of wiping Data, System, and Cache have been included in the ROM that you're flashing. Be aware that these things are being wiped!
  32. There will be a spot where you can only select “NO” as an option. Go ahead and do it. It will mimic you selecting “Yes”.
  33. Allow the file to install
  34. After installation, you will need to reflash the stock recovery image to the Kindle.
  35. From your termial type adb shell
  36. Type mount sdcard
  37. Type exit
  38. You should now be back in the non-shell command line
  39. Type adb push /sbin (For Example: adb push /home/jonathan/kf/stockrecovery.img /sbin/ **there's a space after .img and /sbin/**)
  40. Type dd if=/sbin/stockrecovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/mmci-omap-hs.1/by-name/recovery
  41. You should see a message about 16MB written.
  42. Type adb reboot or reboot
  43. Your device should now reboot. It will actually reboot twice. The initial boot will take some time, so be patient. After the second boot, you should be greeted by the CM7 logo!
