Roaming charges are one of those travel costs everyone grumbles about and most people pay anyway. Opera thinks the fix belongs somewhere you probably didn't expect: inside your web browser. Opera for Android now lets you buy and manage a travel eSIM without leaving the app, and there's 3GB of free data to try it first.
What Opera is actually offering
The eSIM covers 47 destinations and gives your whole phone mobile data, not just the browser, so maps, messaging, and everything else keep working. Opera says it's the first browser to build an eSIM in directly. The service runs on Holiday.com's infrastructure, with Opera's app handling setup and purchases.
Where the eSIM works
Europe makes up the bulk of the list: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, and the UK. If you're doing a European summer, you're almost certainly covered.
Coverage beyond Europe
Outside Europe, the eSIM works in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Thailand. That's a solid spread of popular long-haul spots, especially across Southeast Asia. Canada, Mexico, Japan, and the Caribbean aren't on the list at launch.
The free 3GB comes with no strings
The free allowance is 3GB valid for three days. You don't need a payment card, an email address, or any paid plan to claim it, which is a refreshingly low bar for a free trial. At launch it's available to users in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Brazil, and the UAE.
Why a browser is a clever place for this
Most travel eSIM providers want you to download their app and create an account, often right after you've landed and have no signal to do it with. Opera sidesteps that by using an app a lot of people already have installed. It also puts eSIMs in front of people who have never heard of them, and that's a bigger group than you might think.
Plenty of people still don't know eSIMs exist
Opera cites GSMA Intelligence's 2024 Global Consumer Survey, which found that half of consumers don't know the technology exists. Among those who do, only 19% have ever used one. Travel is the obvious entry point, with GSMA finding that 51% of eSIM users had used one on a leisure trip abroad in the previous year.
Set it up at home, use it when you land
You can install the eSIM before you leave, on reliable Wi-Fi, and the clock only starts when it connects to a network at your destination. The free 3GB works the same way. Paid plans stay valid for a year after purchase, so you can buy early and forget about it until the plane lands.
One eSIM for a multi-country trip
The eSIM only needs installing once. If you're hopping from Thailand to Malaysia to Singapore, you top up the same eSIM with a plan for each country rather than setting up a new one at every border. Topping up needs a connection, so Opera recommends doing it before your current data runs dry or over Wi-Fi.
Plans, pricing, and network speeds
Paid plans come in 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB sizes, each valid for 30 days once activated at your destination. Prices vary by country and are shown before you buy. Opera says its plans are around 33% cheaper on average than other major eSIM providers, based on its own comparison of 5GB, 30-day US plans.
Where 5G fits in
The eSIM connects to 5G wherever the local network supports it. Where it doesn't, it drops back to the best available alternative, which is standard for travel eSIMs.
What you'll need to use it
Your phone must support eSIM, be carrier-unlocked, and run Android 10 or newer. The plans are data-only, so your regular number stays as it is, and this is an Android-only feature for now. The free 3GB is limited to those 11 launch markets, but the paid eSIM can be bought anywhere.
Should you bother?
On paper, 3GB of free data with no card required is about as painless an introduction to travel eSIMs as you'll find, though it'll be worth seeing how Opera's 33% savings claim holds up across other countries and plan sizes. Anyone with a favorite provider, or a trip to Japan or Mexico, can sit this one out for now. Everyone else with an unlocked phone should grab the free data before they fly, because an eSIM you need a connection to set up is no help when you're stuck in arrivals without one.
