Dwayne Johnson Confirms Moana 3 Is Being Discussed
At a press conference in Brazil, Dwayne Johnson gave fans reason to hope for another animated sequel. He said,
“Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes,” Johnson revealed (via Variety). “But first, live-action Moana, we'll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers… they will pen Moana 3.”
For now, though, all eyes have been on the live-action Moana, with writing talent like Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller attached for future stories.
Shaky Box Office Predictions for the Live-Action Remake
Disney’s track record with live-action remakes has been strong, but this time expectations have been tempered. Moana 2 brought in a massive $1 billion worldwide. In contrast, Deadline predicted in June that the live-action Moana would open to a domestic total of $85 million. That’s much lower than Toy Story 5’s $159.7 million opening weekend, but higher than Supergirl, which started with $37 million domestically.
For comparison, The Mandalorian and Grogu pulled in $98 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $82 million across the traditional three-day period. So, Moana’s predicted opening would put it in the middle of Disney’s recent releases. Still, by comparison to Moana 2’s box office success, that $85 million figure is a disappointment for a brand as successful as Moana.
High Bar Set by Other Disney Remakes
Disney’s last big live-action adaptation, Lilo and Stitch, also grossed over $1 billion in 2025, setting tough expectations for any film following in its footsteps.
Despite less-than-glowing forecasts for the live-action release, fans of Moana can look forward to future animated adventures, with trusted writers working on the story. The journey through the Moana universe is far from finished, regardless of box office headwinds.
