Netflix has continued to tap into the audience’s appetite for disturbing real-life stories with “The Neighbors from Hell,” following other hits like “Worst Roommate Ever” and “The Rental Nightmare.” Alongside documentaries such as Geeta Gandbhir’s “The Ideal Neighbor,” this series explores four neighborhood feuds that went horrifically wrong. Case 1: Shawna Scott, Frances Zayeer, and a Deadly Betrayal
The first story starts when Shawna Scott offered shelter to her former friend, Frances Zayeer, who was going through personal difficulties. What began as a kind gesture quickly descended into years of toxic conflict—marked by escalating tension, harassment, and repeated calls to the authorities. The situation ended in tragedy after a violent altercation turned into a shooting. Frances Zayeer targeted both Shawna and her husband, David Scott; David was killed on the spot, while Shawna survived the attack.
Shawna has since worked to rebuild her life, living with the trauma and the physical and emotional scars left from the shooting. Frances Zayeer was tried and sentenced to 35 years in prison, with parole eligibility theoretically possible in 2038.
Case 2: The Insurance Scheme That Ended in Disaster
In 2012, Mark Leonard and Monserrate Shirley attempted an insurance fraud by intentionally blowing up their own house to collect a payout. The plan disastrously backfired; the explosion destroyed several neighboring homes and killed three people, turning financial fraud into a deadly crime.
Monserrate Shirley is serving a 50-year prison term and could theoretically be released in 2036. Mark Leonard, who received a life sentence, died in prison on January 30, 2018.
Case 3: The Armstead Family and a Fatal Encounter
Miles and Melina Armstead’s lives were shattered when their former neighbor, Jamal “JT” Thomas, refused to leave after being evicted. Authorities say that, convinced he was the victim of a conspiracy and under the influence of drugs, Thomas began harassing the couple. Despite a request for a restraining order, tensions continued to escalate. On May 1, 2020, when Miles Armstead returned to the property, Thomas shot and killed him in the street.
Case 4: Caroline Herrling and the Mysterious Death of Charles Wilding
Caroline Herrling (also known as Carrie Phenix) reportedly targeted vulnerable owners and affluent homes. In 2020, with several alleged accomplices, she entered the house of Charles Wilding. Shortly after, Wilding died in circumstances authorities described as “undetermined.” Officials believe Herrling’s group took advantage, taking control of the property without reporting Wilding’s death, and eventually forged documents to present Herrling as the executor of the estate.
