What happens when one of Hollywood’s biggest directors stands up for a series as divisive—and expensive—as The Rings of Power? Buckle up, because James Cameron has some thoughts, and they're making waves among fans of Middle-earth and TV alike.

The Most Expensive Adventure Yet

With a staggering budget of about $500 million per season, The Rings of Power has claimed the title of television’s most expensive series to date. Drawing from the legendary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, the story takes viewers to an era set long before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In this series, audiences explore the deeper histories of figures like the elves Elrond and Galadriel, the wizard Gandalf, and Sauron, the dark presence whose legend looms large.

This new look at Middle-earth focuses on its fabled past, offering a fresh perspective to Tolkien enthusiasts and newcomers alike on the fantasy world that helped redefine the genre.

A Divided Fellowship: The Public Reacts

But not everyone’s on board. Since the show’s debut, The Rings of Power has faced intense criticism, especially from fans devoted to Tolkien’s original books:

Rings of Power is what happens when talentless hacks think they are smarter than the author of one of the most influential works of fiction in history.
It’s absolutely abysmal.

Many objected to the show’s departures from established storylines and the introduction of new characters, arguing these changes didn’t advance the main plot. Still, just about everyone agreed on one thing: the visuals. The show’s cinematic quality and immersive production design received widespread praise.

Of course, the debate continues within the fandom. Some find the series refreshing:

Rings of Power is a great series, its only die hard LOTR Tolkien fans that would prefer to never see another creation than experience something that doesn’t fit their rigid view of a fantasy world that the author can no longer write for

Others aren’t quite as forgiving:

Not a diehard, here. Don’t mind the first movie. Didn’t like 2 or 3. Watched four episodes of this dumpster fire. Really bad. Nothing to do with a “rigid worldview” or being a diehard fan or any crap like that. I’d think it’s the opposite—it’s the diehards that refuse to admit something (that they want to like) sucks. And this show REALLY fuckng sucks

And some opinions pull no punches at all:

i don’t where the fuck is he coming from. even if you leave out the fact a man wrote millions of history for characters and dynasties, you can’t derive from them, rather you choose to make a story so fucking bland and bad, the story and dialogues in itself are catastrophic.

James Cameron: Defending Middle-earth’s New Epic

Enter James Cameron—the creative force behind Avatar and Titanic. In a conversation with Collider, Cameron expressed admiration for The Rings of Power’s immersive world-building, reportedly calling the series a “masterpiece.” For Cameron, the standout isn’t just its stunning visuals but the depth and believability of the universe the showrunners have constructed.

During the same interview, Cameron noted that Tolkien’s novels played a deep role in shaping his own approach to writing the Avatar saga. Before mapping out his first three Avatar films, he worked extensively on what he described as a “mythological foundation”—a concept clearly inspired by Tolkien’s extensive lore.

A Boost When It Mattered Most

Cameron’s endorsement brought a surprising boost to the series and turned heads outside the fantasy fanbase. As fans have looked forward to future seasons, the backing of a director as respected as Cameron helped The Rings of Power capture renewed media attention and curiosity from viewers everywhere.

No matter which side you’re on—supporting the show’s new creative directions or criticizing its departures from tradition—one thing is certain: The Rings of Power has become impossible to ignore, especially with James Cameron enthusiastically in its corner.
