Netflix Confirms Nellie Oleson’s Return, But with a Twist
Over 50 years after Michael Landon’s classic family series first won over audiences, Little House on the Prairie is getting a fresh take on Netflix. About a year after the project was announced, Netflix recently confirmed that the reboot is scheduled to premiere on July 9, 2026.
To hype up the release, the streaming service shared the first trailer, which quickly split longtime viewers. While fans got a look at the new Ingalls family, they also noticed something was missing: there was no sign of Nellie Oleson in the initial footage. That assumption, however, was upended by a new announcement.
The Real Nellie: From Fiction to a Netflix Reimagining
According to Alison Arngrim, who played Nellie in the original series, this Netflix version is designed to be more faithful to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books. In the original novels, Nellie Oleson did not actually exist as a single character. She was created by Michael Landon for the TV adaptation as a memorable rival for Laura.
Nellie was actually a blend of several real individuals from Laura’s life—Genevieve Masters, Nellie Owens, and Stella Gilbert—combined to give Laura a proper nemesis on screen. With the reboot aiming for accuracy to the source material, it seemed likely Nellie would not appear. But Netflix had other plans.
Meet the New Nellie: Willa Dunn Joins the Cast
In a statement released on May 27, 2026, Netflix revealed it had cast the actress who will play Laura Ingalls’ future rival. Described as the daughter of a wealthy merchant family in town and familiar to fans as a “spoiled princess” and “real pest,” the character fits the bill for longtime viewers.
“On the outside, Nellie is a truly spoiled first-class princess, and a real pest,” Netflix stated.
“She’s smart, confident, and quick with a retort. She lives to make Laura Ingalls’ life difficult. But under that tough exterior, she’s sensitive and wishes for friendship, even if she doesn’t know how to show it.”
Stepping into the role is young actress Willa Dunn, whose credits include Only Murders in the Building and Poker Face. There is a catch, though—Nellie will not make her debut until the show’s second season. For eager fans, the wait continues.

Original Nellie actress Alison Arngrim responded quickly on Instagram, expressing her excitement for Dunn’s casting:
