Aliens, Chaos, and Life on the Brink
The film unfolds in Hope Harbor, a remote community near a heavily guarded demilitarized zone. At first, Chief of Police Bum-seok, portrayed by Hwang Jung-min, investigates what appears to be reported sightings of a tiger. Very quickly, though, the threat turns out to be far more terrifying: creatures from another world strike the local population, plunging the village into chaos.
Na Hong-jin Returns to His Strengths
With Hope, director Na Hong-jin returned to what he does best: upending the lives of ordinary people with mounting fear, violence, and confusion. The film runs 160 minutes and blends pure action, horror, and science fiction, all with meticulous direction and a sustained sense of dread.
Impressive Cast and Festival Response
Hwang Jung-min leads a high-profile cast, joined by Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon—who achieved international fame with Squid Game—Taylor Russell, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender. Screened in the Official Competition at Cannes, Hope received a seven-minute standing ovation at the end of its showing, cementing its reputation as one of the festival's most stunning entries. Initial critical reactions have been highly positive, especially praising the film's energy and visual ambition.
