If you’re not into the sea or the mountains—but crave a shot of pure adrenaline—Netflix has served up your next binge: Nemesis, a new series tailor-made for fans of high-stakes heist action.

Nemesis: A Streaming Showdown

The competition on Netflix has been fierce. On one end, there’s Patrice Evra and Raymond Domenech; on the other, Isaiah Stiles and Coltrane Wilder. Evidently, audiences love a good showdown: while Le Bus: les Bleus en grève is currently the top film, Nemesis has rapidly climbed to No. 2 among series. Sure, comparing the two titles is apples to oranges, but the temptation is hard to resist. Where Domenech spirals with self-sabotage, the duel between Isaiah and Coltrane is tight—and all the more captivating for it.

Heists, Obsession, and Shifting Lines

In Nemesis, a string of robberies, each executed with a unique approach, throws the police off the trail. The exception is Detective Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Law), who suspects it’s the same crew—a gang responsible for killing his partner. Stiles’s fixation on cracking the case isolates him from his colleagues and starts to tear at his home life.

By contrast, Coltrane Wilder (Y’lan Noel) seems to have figured it all out. A former convict, now a respected businessman, he leads a crew thanks to clever schemes from his sister-in-law Charlie. Coltrane’s operations run smoothly, but his wife Ebony pressures him to leave his criminal life behind once and for all.

Not Your Average Heist Drama

The series is the brainchild of a new creative pair: Tani Marole, in their breakout release, and Courtney A. Kemp, renowned for her work on Power. Their aim wasn’t just another heist story, but a psychological exploration of what leads people down opposing paths. There are no outright heroes or villains—just two men who, under different circumstances, might have been friends. Friends with weapons, perhaps, but friends all the same.

Let’s recap: daring robberies, a methodical criminal mastermind, a detective at risk of losing his personal life—any fan of crime cinema will spot the blueprint of a film that changed the genre over thirty years ago. The influence of Michael Mann’s Heat is unmistakable throughout Nemesis, right down to an intense shootout sequence reminiscent of Mann’s classic. Still, this is more than mere imitation. While the parallel is clear, Nemesis develops its own personality through eight gripping episodes.

Duality at the Heart

One of Nemesis’s greatest strengths is the inverse path of its protagonists. Stiles is consumed by obsession, growing distant from his family and colleagues. He’s no longer truly present as a husband or father—barely even as a cop. Coltrane, in contrast, is a criminal who might give up everything for domestic peace. The show is anchored in human psychology and asks, once legal lines are blurred, who poses the bigger threat? Nemesis leaves the answer up to the viewer.

That’s not to say the action is missing. The show maintains sharp pacing with high-tension heists and crucial moments—like the standout opening of episode six. The direction shines during these scenes, including striking drone shots during chase sequences. Visually, Nemesis brings undeniable flair.

An Ending or a Pause?

If there’s a frustration, it’s the finale—deliberately left open, as if to put pressure on Netflix for a renewal. Given Nemesis’s presence in the Top 2 (and possibly soon at No. 1), hopes are high for a second season. If Netflix walks away, though, the viewers may be the ones left holding the bag.
