A Year of Decline: 20 Million Users Gone, Stock Tumbles
Over the past year, Roblox saw its daily active user count fall from 152 million in the third quarter of 2025 to 132 million by May 2026—a loss of 20 million active users. The downward slide was steady: there were still 144 million daily users at the end of 2025, but by spring 2026 the drop had accelerated. This user exodus was mirrored on Wall Street, with Roblox shares falling more than 18% in the same timeframe.
Age Verification: A Damper on Growth
Roblox pointed to its aggressive rollout of age verification tools, especially in the US and Canadian markets, as a key factor driving users away. The process—requiring users to scan a face or present identification—was designed to prevent teens, who make up around 40% of the audience, from engaging with adults, and vice versa. Roblox confirmed that this system slowed new user acquisition. The company also noted that shutting down servers in Russia contributed to the decline.
Safety Push: Progress, But Imperfect
Facing criticism that it hasn’t done enough to shield children from online predators, Roblox has, over the past several months, introduced new safety tools. Age checks are part of this strategy, but multiple investigations reportedly found them easy to bypass and prone to false positives—sometimes flagging legitimate users by mistake.
The overhaul continued in other ways. Roblox expanded age-based restrictions across its lineup of mini-games and replaced offensive language with AI-generated phrases. CEO David Baszucki has warned these new policies could slow revenue growth in 2026. Nevertheless, at a recent investor event, Roblox reported $1.4 billion in revenue.
Innovation Incoming—But Not Free
Baszucki also shared updates on Roblox Reality, an upcoming AI-driven game generation system. When released, it will enable users to craft advanced gaming experiences—though it is expected to come with a price tag.
In recent months, Roblox teams have reportedly made big improvements to the smoothness and performance of platform demos, adapting the technology to the company’s proprietary Roblox Engine. As of now, there’s no official launch date for the Roblox Reality tool.
