Tired of waiting for your phone to fully charge? Google could have a solution on the horizon with Android 17 Beta 3 and its new ‘Priority Charging' feature—reportedly designed for impatient users everywhere.
What Is Priority Charging?
With Android 17 Beta 3, Google has been testing a feature called Priority Charging. This option, discovered within the code of the beta release, allows Android devices to temporarily pause background activities—such as app updates—to let your phone charge faster. The feature focuses on boosting charging speed by reducing background demands that can slow down the process.
How much faster? According to details in the beta's code, enabling Priority Charging could save users up to about twenty minutes of charging time. That extra time may be useful, whether you're on the go or just eager to get back to 100%.
How Does It Work?
Priority Charging works by putting things like automatic app updates and other non-essential background activities on pause. Importantly, it still allows you to receive calls and messages, so you don't miss vital communications while plugged in. An excerpt from Google’s code notes:
“Priority Charging temporarily pauses background activity, such as app updates, for faster charging. You'll continue to receive calls and messages.”
So, while your notifications and messages still come through, all the battery-draining housekeeping waits until your phone is done charging.
Balancing Speed and Safety
Faster charging can make devices run hotter, and Google appears to have anticipated this concern. Another part of the beta code refers to a smart temperature management system that will keep your phone's battery in a safe temperature range during fast charging:
“For best results, use a 30 W or higher adapter.”
“Your phone will automatically manage temperature fluctuations and keep the battery within a normal range.”
Google suggests a 30-watt or higher charger for optimal results—a power level typical in recent fast-charging adapters available in the United States and abroad.
Will This Feature Be Released to Everyone?
While Priority Charging has shown up in the code for Android 17 Beta 3, it does not yet appear in the public settings menu. That means Google is still testing the feature, and there’s no guarantee it will be included in the final Android 17 release. At this stage, users should view its arrival as promising but not certain.
If it eventually launches, Priority Charging could make charging more efficient and even give phones a slight performance boost by reducing background load during charging. For now, users will need to wait and see if this handy option makes it through Google's development pipeline.
