If you saw a message in Samsung Members titled “URGENT Account Verification Notice for Samsug,” their support team isn't having a bad spelling day. It’s probably some weirdo in a basement trying to scare you.
Users have been seeing a flood of these copy-and-paste direct messages demanding your verification. They also threaten a ridiculous fine if you don’t tap the attached shady link. But Samsung would never ask you for money more than they're already charging you for their phones. So, take your time to review all in-app content before you react.
Pay $500 or lose your Samsung account and devices
Samsung Members is exclusively for Galaxy phones and tablets. It acts as a support hub plus community plus perks center all in one place. Users often post questions, tips, reviews, and photos, and Samsung staff sometimes reply or share official info.
There’s also a support section where you can run diagnostics on your phone or check if anything is wrong with your hardware or software.

Beyond support, Samsung uses the app to push official news, device tips, and promo. The recent $500 fine isn't one of them. The fake account that has been fishing for user funds carries a Samsung logo and a very official-looking layout.
Their announcement claims that, because of “changes in international legislation regarding personal identification of internet platform users (International Act No. 567 EU-DIG-ID-2025),” Samsung has to do an unscheduled verification of your account after a supposed complaint. It's mandatory and cannot be ignored.
If you do ignore it for 24 hours, your account will be suspended and your Samsung device functionality will be restricted. There's a verification link to a website where you'll provide your current tax residency details.

A representative is supposed to contact you for personal identification. It’s signed “The Samsung Security Team” and described as a private notification visible only to you. A user spotted the false alert and made a public post about it on the official community site. Users have since reported the account.
Beware of scammers
Obviously, the Community announcement is fake for several reasons that are obvious even without outside info. For one, real companies do not threaten random fines through a private DM. It's too informal and unprofessional.
There has to be a clear legal and contractual trail of the terms and conditions you agreed to, an invoice or billing notice, proper records for auditors and regulators, and a dispute process.

Asking for your tax residency details via a generic web link is another massive red flag. It's a sensitive information scammers want so they can steal your identity. There's a lot that can go wrong in sharing your name, social security number, address, and more.
Most importantly, even if there were some real legal or billing issues, Samsung would much rather use official channels or ask you to visit a physical outlet.
If you ignored the message, you already did one of the smartest things possible. Continue to avoid content that mixes urgency, a suspicious link, typographical errors, and consequences to get your attention. When in doubt, contact the original support team via the official website.
