Gemini is everywhere now, and it’s hard to ignore what that means. Artificial intelligence is taking over the small actions we used to do ourselves. The leaked Insights feature in Google Messages is the latest example.
It summarizes every link you receive in texts into three short bullets. This update is arriving when websites are already struggling. Search traffic has dropped significantly over the months since AI Overviews appeared. At this rate, most people won’t feel any pressure to visit original news sources at all.
Insights will bring the web to your DMs
Android Authority's teardown team looked inside Google Messages v20251103 beta APK and found hidden strings and settings pointing to a new Insights feature. When someone sends you a link in a chat, you'll soon see a new button.
Press it and it will send the link to Gemini, which in turn, will reply with a short summary of the website. You won't have to open it fully to know what it's saying.

The underlying code for the tool contains instructions to produce three short bullet points under 150 characters each, add a final line with a warning or disclaimer, and state whether the summary is only from the link or from the link plus search results.
It's unclear when exactly these changes will roll out. But you can already preview links in Messages. When enabled, the app shows a small card with a website’s headline, image, and description when someone sends you a URL.

Go to Settings > General settings > Automatic previews. It looks like it'll be tied to the Insights feature and becomes the anchor that Gemini uses to summaries. Google is also doubling the number of pinned chats from 10 to 20 and adding YouTube picture-in-picture inside conversations.
The future of AI search is alarming
Several studies have been digging into how generative AI is affecting how people search for information. Among them is a recent usability study from Nielsen Norman Group. Their findings show a clear split where AI is undeniably altering search behavior.
Yet decades-old habits, especially the instinct to Google something, still have a surprisingly strong grip on people.
Even though AI tools offer huge shortcuts around the tedious parts of research, most users aren’t ready to abandon traditional search. They would rather blend the two. Features like Insights aren't entirely bad. to be fair, it’s not entirely a bad thing.
Sometimes you'll get a link in a chat and you’re not sure what you’re about to open. It could be harmless or contain shady content. It's good to know beforehand what you're up against before you click it.

But that doesn’t mean search numbers haven’t dropped and that it's not concerning. Predictions from Semrush and other SEO experts suggest that search will overtake traditional search by early 2028.
The value of an AI-search visitor is also projected to be much higher, about 4.4 times the value of a typical organic visitor. The current numbers show around 58% of U.S. adults have already encountered AI summaries in their search results. AI Overviews currently appear in about 13% of all Google searches. Whenever they appear, organic clicks tank sharply.
