If you spend a fair bit of time behind the wheel, good news: Google has just added two smart new features to Android Auto that could make your drive smoother and your calls far less annoying. From filtering nuisance callers to jotting down phone notes automatically, here’s what’s new and how it might change your on-the-road experience.

Smarter call screening while you drive

Let’s be honest — there’s nothing more frustrating than your phone lighting up with an unknown number while you’re navigating traffic. Is it your dentist? A delivery? Or just another robocall offering a “free” cruise? Well, Android Auto’s new Call Screen feature could be the answer to every commuter’s prayers.

Borrowed from Google's Pixel smartphones, this feature helps you screen incoming calls by having Google Assistant ask the caller who they are and why they’re ringing. The conversation is then transcribed in real-time and shown on your car display, so you can decide whether to answer — without lifting a finger or losing focus on the road.

It’s a simple idea, but one that can save you time and reduce distractions. Imagine driving during rush hour and being able to skip yet another sales pitch with just a glance. It’s these little upgrades that can make modern tech feel genuinely useful.

Automatic call notes are coming soon

The second update, Call Notes, is a feature many professionals will appreciate — especially if your car often doubles as your mobile office. Rolling out later this year, it will allow Android Auto to automatically capture the key points from your phone conversations. So next time you’re discussing deadlines or project details on the go, you won’t have to scramble to remember what was said.

This feature originally debuted on the Pixel 9 and uses on-device AI to generate a brief summary of your call. It’s particularly helpful if you're unable to write things down mid-conversation — say, when you're holding a coffee in one hand and the steering wheel in the other.

While there’s no fixed release date yet, Google has confirmed that it’s coming to Android Auto in the US and Canada by the end of the year. European users will need to wait a bit longer, but the feature promises to be worth it — especially if you’re juggling work calls between school runs and supermarket dashes.

A step forward for seamless driving tech

Both features point to Google’s broader mission: making in-car tech more intuitive and less distracting. By blending tools from Pixel phones with Android Auto’s dashboard interface, they’re creating an ecosystem that works seamlessly across your devices — and does a bit more thinking for you when your hands are full.

So whether you're dodging spam calls or needing help remembering what your boss just said, these updates could help keep you safer and more efficient on the road. Keep your eyes peeled for updates — and maybe, finally, give that unknown number the brush-off it deserves.
