Apple launched the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max earlier this week, with pre-orders beginning September 12.

iPhone 17 Pro & Pro Max – what’s new

Apple has just revealed the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, calling them “the most powerful and advanced Pro models ever.” Sporting a bold new colorway, a redesigned camera housing, and new internals, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max promise to come harder at Android than ever before. We don't usually cover them, but I will admit that the Orange finish has piqued my interest.

Before we go deep, here are the top upgrades and highlights:

  • Design & materials: Both phones now use a heat-forged aluminum unibody with a built-in vapor chamber for cooling. The whole enclosure is designed to help dissipate heat more efficiently and improve battery performance.

  • Chip & performance: They’re powered by the new A19 Pro chip. Apple says it's their most efficient and powerful chip ever for iPhones, enabling better sustained performance, especially under heavy load.

  • Camera system: Triple 48MP “Fusion” rear cameras — Main, Ultra‑Wide, plus a new Telephoto — with “the equivalent of eight lenses.” The Telephoto lens delivers up to 8× optical‑quality zoom, and the sensor is 56% larger than before. The front camera is upgraded to a new 18MP Center Stage camera with a square sensor, improving framing, especially for group selfies and switching orientations.

  • Display & durability: The Pro and Pro Max retain the 6.3‑inch / 6.9‑inch Super Retina XDR displays, with ProMotion (120Hz), high peak brightness, and now Ceramic Shield 2 on the front (for better scratch resistance). Also, the back is now protected with Ceramic Shield.

  • Battery life: Apple promises “an enormous leap in battery life.” While exact battery capacities aren’t always published, the Pro Max is said to deliver up to 39 hours of video playback. That’s a significant point in its favour.

  • Finishes & availability: New finishes: deep blue, cosmic orange, and silver. Pre‑orders start September 12, and the phones become available from September 19.

How does this stack up against Android phones

To give some broader context: many Android flagships already offer high zoom (some with actual optical 5× or greater), vapor chamber cooling, and large sensor cameras. The iPhone 17 Pro series is catching up to or matching many of those features, while leaning heavily on Apple’s software + hardware integration (e.g., image processing, thermal management).

For example, Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S‑series or Google Pixel Pro lines often push aggressive zoom optics, high refresh rates with LTPO displays, or advanced cooling systems. Apple’s move to 8× optical‑quality zoom, larger sensors, and better cooling are clearly responses to the competition. Also, Android makers have long offered more variety in materials and finishes (ceramics, different metals) and sometimes faster wired charging; Apple is still more conservative on charging speed.
