Canada's new Minister of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Evan Solomon, is all about AI, believe it or not.

Incumbent Evan Solomon, since May 13, 2025, was appointed as the first-ever minister of AI for Canada in an attempt to bring Canada in line with the rest of America. The veteran broadcaster and newly elected Toronto Centre MP made headlines recently after praising the Google NotebookLM for helping him to summarize the previous Liberal AI bill, praising it for its accuracy.

Should Android users rush to download it? Read on to find out.

Canada's Minister of Artificial Intelligence Using AI

It was during an interview with the Canadian magazine Maclean's where Solomon answered a question about how he uses AI in his free time. He said, “I used AI today.” He went on to say, “I had to get a briefing on Bill C-27, a piece of legislation from a few years ago that has to do with privacy and data. I uploaded it to Google NotebookLM, asked the software to create a podcast, and listened to it on the 15-minute drive to my constituency office.

It's innovative, to be honest. He's a busy man who only wanted to save some time. According to Solomon, the Google-powered language learning model (LLM) did exactly as he asked without any hallucinations. By hallucinations, he's referring to the issue that once plagued AI LLMs, which doesn't so much anymore. Sometimes, LLMs can make things up yet make them seem factual.

ChatGPT's OpenAI GPT-4.5 has the lowest hallucination rate at 15% (Al Multiple). There's no data published about the Google NotebookLM, although it's apparently designed to minimize hallucinations. Despite that, Google has put a warning at the bottom of the NotebookLM window that states, ‘Google NotebookLM can be inaccurate,' and for users to double-check responses.

Should Android Users Download Google NotebookLM?

Well, the Minister of Artificial Intelligence might like it, but we wouldn't necessarily rush to download it.

The Logic, Canada's online business and tech newsroom, conducted its own review and stated, ‘The results were far from perfect.' Now, no LLM is perfect, but many are extremely advanced. The Logic conducted their own review by using the same steps Solomon described to summarize the same bill he did. The result was that Google NotebookLM misled about a core feature of the bill twice on three different attempts.

Although they couldn't get the exact audio prompt Solomon used, The Logic believes they replicated his request to the LLM pretty closely. A feature of NotebookLM is that users can upload files and type their query about the content or use a summarizing function. It will then generate a podcast-style audio file that Solomon would have listened to on his journey to work.

The fact that it produced misleading information on a core feature of the bill two out of three times doesn't look promising. For an application that's ‘designed to minimize hallucinations,' it doesn't exactly live up to that on a simple request.

Should Android users rush to download it? We'd look into other options first.

How Does It Compare to Other Artificial Intelligence Models?

Google Notebook is relatively new, released in July 2023, compared to the more well-known LLMs like ChatGPT or Google Gemini.

A newer LLM typically means it's not as advanced, and that feels true for the Notebook LM. The NotebookLM focuses on synthesizing information from user-uploaded documents and linked sources. From that, it can provide citations and source-specific conversations. Other LLMs, like Google Gemini, have broader uses. Google Gemini is multimodal, handling various types of content, but NotebookLM specializes in academic and professional workflows, generating summaries, creating mind maps, etc.

And that's the issue. If it's designed to be specifically good at summarizing but summarizes a core element of a bill wrong, what does that tell you?

Some of the more advanced AI models include:

  • OpenAI's GPT-5
  • Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet
  • Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro

Those three aren't immune to getting things wrong; it's just that they're more advanced.

Can We Trust LLMs?

Not entirely. And we don't think you ever will be able to trust LLMs entirely. They are becoming more advanced, but even the more advanced models, such as ChatGPT-5, still include a warning at the bottom advising that their LLM can still produce false information.

For now, the point of LLMs is to help and guide you, not to give you concrete truth and facts. Yes, it can and will produce concrete facts, but like Solomon using the Google NotebookLM and thinking it summarized the bill perfectly when it didn't, you should always double-check the information it's providing.

In Summary

Our summary is not to rush to use the Google Notebook LM. You can, if you want to, but we'd say there are other free LLMs available that do the job better. It will be interesting to see how the Google Notebook LM improves.
