Samsung was one of two mainstream companies to be at the very start of the foldable journey (alongside Motorola). While it was a pioneer in the new market segment, it didn't take long for the competition to overtake Samsung's efforts and release devices that were arguably a lot more compelling.
Thankfully, the South Korean OEM seems to have finally woken up, and it looks like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be its first foldable in a while to really try to beat the competition. Samsung continues to tease how thin, light, and “Ultra” it is going to be, so here's a good look at everything the company has revealed so far.
Samsung Says the Galaxy Z Fold 7 Will Deliver an “Ultra” Experience
About a week ago, Samsung dropped a press release talking about the “next chapter of Ultra,” and the sole graphic on the page was a video of a foldable phone. Needless to say, with the company's next launch being related to its foldables, it seemed like there was going to be a Z Fold Ultra this year.
However, that notion has been debunked. Instead, it seems Samsung is saying that the regular Z Fold 7 will be bringing the Ultra experience by ticking these boxes:
- Industry-leading hardware
- Cutting-edge performance
- Seamless AI integration
For a company that seems to be sleeping at the wheel these days, this sounds like exciting news, and I personally can't wait to see a Samsung foldable that can actually compete with the best of Chinese OEMs in 2025.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 Will Be Thinner, Lighter, and More Durable
Even though it has nothing to do with performance, one aspect where foldable phones are heavily scrutinized is in their dimensions. These devices are essentially two phones glued together, and as a result, each half of the phone needs to be as thin as possible to improve comfort and usability when the device is folded.
It seems that the Z Fold 7 will be the much-needed renaissance for Samsung. The Z Fold 6 had a thickness of 5.6mm when folded, and according to rumors and Samsung's own teasing, the Z Fold 7 won't just be thinner than its predecessor, but might be the thinnest foldable in the world.
| Unfolded Thickness | |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 (Rumored) | 3.9mm |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition | 4.9mm |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 | 5.6mm |
| Oppo Find N5 | 4.2mm |
| Honor Magic V3 | 4.4mm |
As you can see from the table above, the Z Fold 7 would only need to be 4.1mm thick when unfolded to beat the current king, the Oppo Find N5. However, the Honor Magic V5 is coming soon, and that might further raise the bar. Samsung confirms this will be its thinnest and lightest foldable, so it remains to be seen by just how much it will undercut its 4.9mm record.
Samsung's Next Foldable Will Come With a Smart, AI-Powered Camera
AI is the big thing for all tech companies right now, and we've seen that buzzword invade the mobile space. I do acknowledge that it can be useful, especially when used in the right places, and Samsung believes the camera is one of the most important of them.
It seems that the OEM is planning to take the camera in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 beyond a tool for imaging, but use it as a medium for AI to better understand the things that are around you, and it pledges that your data will always be protected.
