Android 16 has now been released as a stable update for all supported Pixel devices. They include the Pixel 6, 7, 8, and 9 series along with any other models still receiving official support from Google. Users should see the update arriving over-the-air in the coming hours or days, depending on regions and carriers.

Android 16 is feature-packed and ready to impress

In a recent blog post, Google said that Android 16 lays the foundation for their new Expressive Material 3 redesign. It can only mean that the code and systems that support it are now built into the update. Unfortunately, the actual visual redesign hasn't been activated yet.

But it should appear in a later update, most likely Android 16.1 release or another Pixel Feature Drop. While we wait, Android 16 arrives four months earlier than usual and still brings interesting improvements that are already changing how the system works. Here's an expanded list of the earlier announced features:

AI-powered scam detection in Google Messages

Android 16 adds local on-device AI to scan and detect scam or phishing messages in Google Messages. If your phone detects something suspicious, it alerts you and offers the option to block or report the sender. It also restricts certain permissions during active calls to prevent social engineering attacks, such as someone tricking you into installing something while you're still on the phone.

Live updates

Android 16 introduces Live Updates, a feature similar to Apple’s Live Activities. It allows you to track real-time events, such as ride-hailing pickups, food deliveries, or navigation directions directly from your notification panel. At launch, the version only supports progress-centric displays.

For example, it can show how far your ride is or when your order is being delivered. Future Android 16 updates may integrate Live Updates into the status bar and allow at-a-glance access to key updates without pulling down the notification shade. Support is also expected to expand across more apps and other phone brands.

Predictive back

When you tap the back button, Android now shows a preview of where you’ll go before actually switching screens. You'll see a blurred version of the home screen so you can decide whether to exit or not. It reduces accidental exits and improves navigation clarity. While browsing an app,

Notification cooldown

Google first introduced this feature in a Pixel Feature Drop in March 2025. It's now built into Android 16 to help reduce notification fatigue. Automatic alert volume and vibration intensity reduction will save you when multiple notifications rushing onto your screen from the same app within a short period. If WhatsApp sends five back-to-back messages, the first may ring at full volume, but subsequent ones will arrive more quietly.

Custom keyboard shortcuts

You can now assign keyboard shortcuts to launch apps or perform quick actions, especially on tablets with physical keyboards. Pressing Ctrl + G may open Gmail instantly, while Ctrl + S launches split-screen mode for multitasking.

Audio hearing aids

Your phone can now act as a microphone input for Bluetooth LE Audio hearing aids to make sound clearer in noisy environments. It routes your phone's mic audio directly to your aids. You can also control hearing aid volume and mic settings directly from Android settings.

Grouped notifications

Android 16 now automatically groups notifications from the same app, regardless of how developers have configured their apps. Before now, developers could bypass grouping where Gmail or Instagram and other apps could flood your notification panel with multiple entries. Now, all notifications from the same app are bundled into a single expandable card in a way that's less overwhelming.

Camera and video upgrades

There are now improvements to manual camera controls for high-end apps, especially for photographers and creators. You should see Hybrid auto exposure, Manual ISO, shutter speed, color temperature controls, Enhanced night mode, and Ultra HDR support in HEIC format features added to your camera app.

Haptic sliders

Tactile feedback occurs when you're adjusting volume and brightness to give you a physical click sensation as you slide. It makes control adjustments feel more accurate and responsive. You may notice a tiny vibration at each step, so you don’t overshoot the level.

New desktop mode for large devices

This next feature takes inspiration from Samsung DeX and introduces an upgraded desktop-style interface for tablets and large-screen Android devices. It enables you to resize app windows and run multiple apps in split-screen mode. However, the feature won’t be available immediately for all devices. It will arrive later this year for supported large-screen devices.

Advanced protection mode

This feature expands Google's existing Advanced Protection Program. It bundles several critical security features into a single toggle. These protections cannot be accidentally turned off once you turn them on, and they include intrusion logging where your phone records suspicious access attempts.

It also automatically restarts the device after long idle periods and locks the phone when movement patterns suggest theft. It's more ideal for public figures with a higher risk of targeting, although it’s available for anyone who wants to tighten their phone’s security.

Trade-in mode

Factory reset your phone and enter a diagnostics mode that protects your personal data during trade-in or resale. Your phone can be tested without exposing private info.

Google publishes Android 16 source code to AOSP

In addition to the device rollout, Google has also uploaded the final Android 16 source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Third-party manufacturers and custom ROM developers can now begin building their own versions of the software for non-Pixel devices.
