It’s hard to overstate what Nintendo games have meant to whole generations of childhoods across the world. For many of us, Nintendo was our first world and its games taught you that behind every pipe, castle, dungeon, or mysterious forest always had more to discover if you were curious enough.
If you want that retro experience on your Android phone or tablet, emulators are one of the best ways to do it. Among them, Azahar is a notable name and it's built a strong reputation with faithful Nintendo 3DS emulation on Android and other platforms. Its latest update offers compatibility and performance improvements across the board.
Azahar 2122 update makes your 3DS games faster
Azahar version 2122 Alpha 1 is a new update that introduces a long list of technical improvements aimed at making Nintendo 3DS games run more smoothly and consistently on all supported devices. The most significant change is a new implementation of SIMD operations, which is short for Single Instruction, Multiple Data.
SIMD allows a device’s processor to handle multiple pieces of data in parallel, rather than processing each one step-by-step. It's great for an emulator where it doesn't have to pretend to be the original 3DS hardware while translating everything into what your Android phone can understand and display.

The practical result is that games should now run faster, with higher and more stable frame rates. But there's a small trade-off. Because the new SIMD method takes advantage of features found only in more recent processors, it is no longer compatible with very old x86_64 CPUs. Specifically, processors from 2011 or earlier. They lack certain instruction sets needed to run the code efficiently.
For Android users, it's not an issue because virtually all Android devices capable of running Azahar already use ARM-based processors with different optimization paths. So unless you're trying to run Azahar on a very old desktop or laptop PC, you won’t be affected by this change.
Update breathes new life into Luigi game and more
The Azahar update also brings some much-needed love to specific games that have given the emulator trouble in the past. Titles like Luigi’s Mansion 2, Star Fox 64 3D, and The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth all benefit from targeted tweaks in this release.
Each of these games has its own quirks that made them tricky to emulate cleanly. Luigi’s Mansion 2, for example, relies heavily on dynamic lighting and subtle environmental effects, which can bog down emulation if not handled right. Star Fox 64 3D also sees a boost, particularly in how fast-paced scenes are rendered. Previously, space battles and fast flight sections could dip in frame rate or show minor visual hiccups.

Additionally, there's now the ability to display extra performance statistics through the on-screen overlay, which you can toggle through the Layout settings menu. By default, only the game’s frames per second appears, giving players a simple way to monitor performance. But for more advanced users, having access to deeper stats can help fine-tune settings or troubleshoot tricky games.
Another welcome tweak is to the aspect ratio controls when playing in single-screen mode. Since 3DS games were originally designed for a dual-screen experience, single-screen play often required compromises. Currently, you can adjust how the game scales and fits your device’s display.
The steps you go through when first installing Azahar or setting it up on a new device has also been streamlined. The number of configuration pages has been reduced. It’s a small change, but one that should help lower the barrier to entry, especially for newcomers to the emulation scene.
Azahar update is still in development
Right now, the newest version of Azahar is available to download through the project’s official GitHub page. That said, it's still in its alpha stage and very much a “test it early if you’re curious” release, and hasn’t been rolled out to the main Play Store yet.

That Play Store listing, which fully replaced the old Lime3DS app earlier this year, is still running the last stable build, which is Version 2121.2. However, if you’ve opted into the public beta program through Google Play, the new Alpha version is available there for testers to help put it paces ahead of the wider release.
