The Oppo Find N5 launched about two weeks ago, with the unique status of being the thinnest foldable smartphone in the world. Despite that, it still managed to fit in a massive battery and flagship specs across the board. For the foldable lovers, it should have been the easiest choice to make.
Unfortunately, with no OnePlus Open 2 to come and copy its homework and the Find N5's global launch turning out to be a lot less “global” than we thought, there's still a throne to be taken and it seems that the successor to one of the usual foldable kings is going to be the one to make it work.
The Honor Magic V4 Has the Potential to Take Back the Record for Thinnest Foldable
Last year, we saw the Honor Magic V3 establish itself as the thinnest foldable in the world, and the best part about it doing that was that it showed it was possible for a device to be ridiculously thin without making major compromises on the spec sheet. It held its crown for some time, at least until the Oppo Find N5 showed up late last month and showed that it was possible for a foldable to get even thinner.
Unfortunately, the fatal flaw of the Find N5 wasn't in its actual spec sheet but rather its availability. You see, we were excited to hear that the phone was going to have a “global launch,” but ultimately, that ended up being constrained to select markets in Asia. That means prospective buyers in other parts of the world simply don't have a way to buy the device easily.
So what can you do if you want a foldable that's crazy thin but you don't want to jump through hoops? The answer? Wait for the Honor Magic V4, according to Digital Chat Station. The device will have a folded thickness of less than 9mm, which could put it on par or make it slimmer than the Find N5's 8.9mm thickness. Looking at Honor's track record, it's certain that the phone will find its way to the UK and Europe at the very least.
The Rest of the Spec Sheet Will Be Flagship-Grade, as Expected of an Honor Magic Foldable
One reason I'm a big fan of the flagship smartphones being released by Chinese OEMs is that they don't compromise on their spec sheets. It's all the better for consumers. Honor's foldables have been great, especially last year's Magic V3, and it's pretty easy for me to recommend them to those who are looking for not just form but function as well.
Digital Chat Station revealed aspects of the spec sheet. The device will opt for the Snapdragon 8 Elite, though whether it will use a binned version with one core less, like the Oppo Find N5, isn't certain. The diagonal of both displays will decrease, oddly. Both are 120Hz LTPO displays and the inner screen will measure 8 inches while the cover display will be 6.45 inches. That could likely point to a change in the aspect ratio.
Besides that, we know that the phone will have a side-mounted fingerprint reader, a 50MP primary camera, and a trendy 200MP 3x telephoto camera. It will also come with support for wireless charging and IPX8 certification.
