During this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Qualcomm made waves with a tantalizing video teaser: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset is set to launch this October. The announcement has sparked anticipation and speculation about the features and capabilities of Qualcomm's upcoming flagship mobile platform.

The Tantalizing Confirmation

The timing of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4's release follows a pattern set by its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which was unveiled last October and subsequently featured in devices towards the end of the year, including the Galaxy S24 lineup earlier this year. Qualcomm's Don McGuire (Senior VP and Chief MO) has hinted at significant advancements in the new chipset, suggesting that the company's mobile platforms are undergoing a reinvention with the introduction of Nuvia’s Oryon CPU, which is now confirmed to be the main cores of the much anticipated SoC.

While specific details about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4's specifications remain scarce (at least officially), it is widely expected that the chipset will prioritize on-device AI capabilities and generative AI technologies as per the trend for the last few years. Indeed, the teaser indirectly specified that there would be big changes for its Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

These advancements aim to improve user experience on the data automation front, offering new and exciting features that leverage the data generation power of artificial intelligence we know today.

Rumors surrounding the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 so far, suggest that it will be built on TSMC's cutting-edge 3nm process, one step more advanced than its predecessor. Such changes are usually followed by gains in efficiency, particularly on the energy consumption front. In fact, a leaked benchmark from January even indicated that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 seemed to have outperformed Apple's A17 Pro chipset, setting a high bar for performance in the mobile industry.

However, these advancements may come at a cost, as rumors also suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could be more expensive and power-intensive relative to its performance (despite the process node shift). Since, if the jump from 3.30 GHz to 4.0 GHz and the exclusion of efficiency cores are to be confirmed, we should also expect an exponential curve toward overall power use and heat accumulation.

If smartphone manufacturers pass these costs onto consumers, we may see flagship devices in 2025 commanding higher price tags for most future releases.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Despite the hype generated by the recent tweet, we must all stay calm since October is still quite a ways away from our expected tech release timeline. After all, details about the chipset's specifications and features may still develop as we approach the launch date.

For now, tech enthusiasts and smartphone aficionados can look forward to the Snapdragon Summit in October, where Qualcomm is expected to officially present this next-generation flagship chipset.
