MediaTek and Nvidia team up to make car cockpits smarter and better connected

MediaTek's reputation in recent years has grown in leaps and bounds with its Dimensity processors to be found in smartphones across the segment in almost every category, not to mention the chips that power smart devices such as smart TVs and Amazon's speakers, tablets, and smart displays. According to today's announcement of its new partnership with Nvidia, it seems that MediaTek will expand its scope to automobiles with its Dimensity Auto Cockpit platform.

MediaTek will leverage its expertise in 5G, Bluetooth, WiFi, and even satellite connectivity with Nvidia's Drive OS software forming the basis for an in-car infotainment system which the two companies hope will provide a one-stop-shop for the automotive industry when it comes to developing the next generation of connected vehicles.

With this partnership, our collaborative vision is to provide a global one-stop shop for the automotive industry, designing the next generation of intelligent, always-connected vehicles,” said Rick Tsai, Vice Chairman and CEO of MediaTek. “Through this special collaboration with NVIDIA, we will together be able to offer a truly unique platform for the compute intensive, software-defined vehicle of the future.”

The collaboration includes the development of automotive SoCs that integrate a new Nvidia GPU chiplet that features Nvidia AI and graphics IP. These chiplets are connected by an ultra-fast and coherent chiplet interconnect technology.

“According toGartner, the total addressable market for infotainment and instrument cluster SoCs used within vehicles will reach $12 billion in 2023.1”

MediaTek’s smart cabin solutions will run Nvidia Drive OS, Drive IX, CUDA and TensorRT software technologies which deliver a full range of AI cabin and cockpit functions with cutting-edge graphics, AI, safety and security features. MediaTek will work with NVIDIA to deliver automotive solutions that surpass the industry’s growing needs and demands while posing a significant market opportunity for the companies.
