AT&T has announced that its 5G and Fiber networks coverage is more than 2.91 million square miles, which is the most of any US carrier by over 250,000 square miles. With coverage of its networks expanding by 100k square miles in 2023 so far, AT&T hopes to cover even more locations thanks to its collaboration with AST SpaceMobile on satellite communications using current handsets. AT&T also commented on other achievements that it's made as well as upcoming projects.
AT&T's partnership with AST SpaceMobile aims to create the first space-based cellular broadband network in order to expand the carrier's coverage to more locations using a normal handset. In basic terms, this space-based cellular network will allow for voice, text, and video capabilities without needing special equipment on the ground, thanks to the use of low-earth orbiting satellites.
New Resiliency — guided by a climate analysis tool co-developed by AT&T and USDOE’s Argonne National Laboratory (which is now available for public use)
- Established a 3rd emergency pathway to each mobility network hub to deal with extreme weather, reducing the likelihood of a major outage by nearly 35%
- Refreshed power backup systems throughout the network
- Proud to have the largest and most advanced disaster recovery programs of its kind as the final backstop
New Footprint – 100,000 new square miles added this year (for context, that’s the size of the UK!)
- AT&T now covers 2.91 million square miles, which is larger than our competitors by over 250,000 square miles
- Brought mid-band 5G spectrum to more than 150 million people (doubling AT&T’s EOY 2022 target) and brought 5G+ to 70 venues and airports
- Grown the most reliable 5G network – reaching 290 million people in 24,000 cities across the U.S.
- And, soon ANYWHERE … by testing and developing an innovative satellite solution (based on regular, current smartphones) with our collaboration with AST SpaceMobile
New Collaborations on Tribal Lands
- Increased coverage on federally recognized tribal lands by 40% – and today AT&T is live streaming from Cherokee Nation at 1 pm CT for the first mobile call from a part of Cherokee Nation where residents used to have to drive 10 miles down the road just to get service.
- Here’s the live stream link (Facebook page)
Continued our Focus on FirstNet — THE first responder network
- 250,000+ MORE square miles than any other commercial network
- FirstNet covers 99% of the U.S. population
- Surpassed 99% of Band 14 coverage
Fiber is the backbone
- We laid more than 60,000 miles of fiber in the U.S. in 2022 – and that fiber carries more than 594 petabytes of data traffic daily
