Motorola confirms phones getting upgraded to Android 11 – kicks 2018 handsets to the curb

Motorola

We’ve seen Samsung promise up to three years of OS upgrades to phones ranging as far back as the Galaxy S10, which is a huge improvement over its previous reputation as a brand that didn’t seem to care much about its customer’s needs. Seemingly ready to take up that particular mantle is Motorola whose list of phones it plans to upgrade to Android 11 does not include a single handset from 2018.

And that’s not all. Even if your phone is on the magical list, Motorola says it plans on rolling out the Android 11 update “starting in the coming months, pending on partner support.” It’s likely that the cheaper the handset the later it will receive the Android 11 update.

As for Motorola One Action owners in the US, you have our most sincere sympathies. Why? Well, your phone won’t be getting updated the this latest version of Android because you are in the wrong location. Yes, you read that right. Only the European and Latin American variants are scheduled to be updated, and that’s because they are part of Google’s Android One program.

This is the list of Motorola smartphones scheduled to be updated at some point in the coming months, which is likely to be the only update for many of them:

  • Motorola Razr 5G
  • Motorola Razr 2019
  • Motorola Edge
  • Motorola Edge Plus
  • Motorola One 5G
  • Motorola One Action
  • Motorola One Fusion
  • Motorola One Fusion Plus
  • Motorola One Hyper
  • Motorola One Vision
  • Moto G 5G
  • Moto G 5G Plus
  • Moto G Pro
  • Moto G Stylus
  • Moto G9
  • Moto G9 Play
  • Moto G9 Plus
  • Moto G9 Power
  • Moto G8
  • Moto G8 Power
  • Lenovo K12 Note

Once one of the shining lights when it came to updating its handsets, Motorola has lapsed in its responsibility to its smartphone customers. A single software bump in the lifetime of a smartphone simply isn’t good enough, and there are similarly priced alternatives available from good smartphone brands to make it easy to vote with your wallet.
