Check out the OnePlus 8T Concept phone with its stunning color-changing rear panel

OnePlus 8T Concept

We’ve already reviewed the OnePlus 8T, a phone that more than holds its own in the face of a crowded affordable flagship market, and now its time to take a look at the handset sporting a rather unique finish that dynamically changes the color of the rear panel according to the magnetic waves around us. The technology is called ECMF (Electronic Color, Material and Finish), and was created by OnePlus Gaudi, a design team based in Shenzhen, New York, Taipei, and India.

Besides looking pretty, the ECMF technology could one day allow for touchless notifications by flashing a certain color to signify an incoming call with the user able to accept or reject the call by a simple gesture that is picked up by the Reacting Sensing function. The mmWave technology on the OnePlus 8T Concept can register a user’s breathing which enables the color to change in sync, effectively making the phone a biofeedback device. How clever is that?

“OnePlus 8T Concept picks up where OnePlus Concept One left off by incorporating ECMF (Electronic Colour, Material and Finish) to allow the physical design of the device to work dynamically with the user and software features. For the 8T ECMF, that ECMF has taken the form of a color-changing film that contains metal oxide in glass, the valence state of the metal ions varying under different voltages. That means that when the metal oxide activates, the color of the glass changes from a dark blue to a light silver.”

As with the Concept One, the OnePlus 8T Concept is just that, a concept that is unlikely to ever come to market. But, we may see the EMCF technology featured on the device in the years ahead as it’s perfected and made ready for prime time.
