Microsoft Launcher has been updated to version 6.0, which the company says has been built on a new codebase, allowing the developers to include more new features than ever plus reduced memory use, quicker launch times, and lower battery use.
The Microsoft Launcher for Android was designed to make it easier to move from working on a Windows 10 device to your Android device, and back again. The app has been redesigned and now has a more personal experience, starting with a customizable news feed to keep the user updated on relevant and important stories. Microsoft also added the ability to use the daily Bing wallpaper feature, or of course your own image, and there’s support for Android’s system-wide dark mode, for compatible devices. The developers also introduced custom adaptable icon packs for that consistent look and feel, and the launcher works in both portrait and landscape modes. Finally, the least noteworthy change is how the app has a new icon.
Microsoft’s developers note that there are a small number of issues with this version. One is that Android 10 navigation gestures may not work with all devices, an issue other Android launchers struggle with. The second issue is that although the app will work on Android 7.0, the dark mode is only supported on Android 8.0 and later. The release notes also caution about problems synchronizing sticky notes after updating the app, and how not all devices will support changing the default app launcher. Finally, notification badges may need to be enabled again after installing the new version.
If you’re a heavy Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 user, or if perhaps your business uses these technologies, the Microsoft Launcher may make life easier for you. Microsoft explains that the latest update is currently rolling out to the general public, and is available at the Google Play Store, linked below.
