Made By Google is preparing three smartphones for release later in 2020, believed to be derivatives of the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5. These were believed to be a single Pixel 4a model, a Google Pixel 5, and a Google Pixel 5 XL. However, code discovered in the Google Search app shows a Google Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G), and Pixel 5.
These references were discovered by Dylan Roussel, 9to5Google, as he searched for the Google project codenames “bramble” and “redfin” in the Google Search app code. Codenames bramble and redfin have previously been associated with 2020 Pixel phones, based around the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip, including support for 5G networks. The assumption was that these two codenames were for Google Pixel 5 and Google Pixel 5 XL phones.
However, Roussel discovered another codename, “sunfish,” describing the Google Pixel 4a, showing here. Codename bramble refers to the 5G version and redfin, the Google Pixel 5. All three devices could be based around the Snapdragon 765G, down from four devices in 2020.

If the Pixel 4a follows in the footsteps of the Pixel 3a, we can expect a polycarbonate body, less sophisticated (but still very capable) camera hardware, and some missing or reduced features such as wireless charging or a smaller battery, but will retain the 3.5mm headphone socket. We may see the Pixel 4a (5G) being a physically larger device, similar to the Pixel 3a XL and Pixel 3a. Other rumors and leaked renders show the Pixel 4a (5G) coming with a dual rear camera arrangement. Meanwhile, the Pixel 5 could have a more premium glass and aluminum build and design, plus Qi wireless charging and power-sharing technologies. Google may include additional benefits for Pixel 5 owners such as unlimited full quality Google Photos storage (we can hope!).
The next Made By Google event is going to be exciting! It looks like we’re getting three new Pixel smartphones, each subtly different from the other, aimed at a different audience, but based around the same core hardware.
