With Samsung launching foldable smartphones every time it unveils a new flagship range, its local rival has been suspiciously absent from the segment. Instead, it would appear that LG is taking a different direction when it comes to smartphones with extendable displays by focusing on rollable smartphones, the first of which could launch in early 2021.
According to The Elec, LG's rollable smartphone is known as B Project and the prototype is already in production at the company's factory in Pyeongtaek. With LG's mobile division on a losing streak of twenty consecutive quarters, B Project is the product that the company hopes will restore its brand image to consumers. How did the B Project name come about? Well, apparently the ‘B' represents the name of LG CEO, Kwon Bong-seok.
Surprisingly, BOE is co-developing the rollable display for the B Project handset with LG, with the panel using flexible OLED technology to achieve the ability to roll and unroll sideways.
B Project could be the shot in the arm that LG's mobile division needs to reach profitability for the first time in five years, and we are certainly excited about it. We just hope that LG remembers that a great smartphone isn't just about hardware and design, that it also needs to bring its software up to scratch to make the most of this new form factor.
