Live TV streaming services are a dangerous game to play. We've seen big names fold out of the market, like Sony's PlayStation Vue, despite offering a great service. We've also seen reliable services consistently increase pricing, like from Sling TV and even YouTube TV, all thanks to thorny deals with the actual content providers.
It seems like the kind of product that most companies don't actually want to deal with, but Amazon TV rumors seem to hint at something else.
What is Amazon TV?
An Amazon TV live streaming service actually dates back a few years, where Amazon wanted to try and get into the live TV game around the ground floor. Unfortunately they weren't able to secure the deals to make the service profitable (sensing a pattern here?) so they never actually went forward with anything.
Well, fast forward a bit, and on Sinclair's new Cubs sports network, Marquee Sports Network, there's an option to sign in to the channel with Amazon TV. Trying to use it gives you the error that MSN isn't available on Amazon TV, and simply redirects users to Amazon.com/TV. That link currently dumps you off onto Amazon's regular site where you can buy and stream content through Prime Video.
So what does all of this mean? Well, it could very well mean that Amazon has some deals lined up, and they're ready to plunge into the crowded, competitive, cutthroat market of live TV streaming services. It could also mean that Sinclair wants to sell the service as a standalone Amazon Channel, which could be bundled in with your Prime subscription, and no live TV service is coming at all.
It's hard to tell at this point, but it's definitely something to keep an eye on.
