No benchmark is a perfect representation of real-world performance, however Antutu's fairly reliable new benchmarks of Huawei's latest value silicon to be the new mid-range champion.

For years Qualcomm and the Snapdragon 6XX and more recently 7XX have ruled the roost of the mid-range mobile chip market, with the best CPU performance and efficiency, and by far the best GPU power… until yesterday, when Huawei launched their new Kirin 810 chip.

Details of the Kirin 810 were learned ahead of time, as we reported on a few days ago, however we had no actual performance numbers and based off HiSilicon and Qualcomm's history I assumed the Kirin 810's GPU would be somewhat inferior to that of the Snapdragon 730.

Well now we have some official performance numbers from Antutu benchmark – and though benchmarks are far from a perfect marker of real-life performance, Antutu is a replicable and reasonable marker of power – and the numbers reveal a chip flaunting a more powerful CPU and GPU that will run more efficiently on its 7nm process than Qualcomm's latest mid-ranging Snapdragon 730 on Samsung's 8nm process (which is really just a tweaked 10nm anyway).

Also in the chart released is pitted Qualcomm's 2018 mid-ranging Snapdragon 710, and though that in itself is an excellent chip with enough performance for the vast majority of people, it is positively obliterated by the newer processors.

And indeed, if we look at the results posted by the Kirin 810 we find that not only is it 13% faster than the Snapdragon 730 overall, but (not pictured in the graph) it is even about on par with 2018's flagship champion the Snapdragon 845, while being far more efficient.

To be honest, I am thoroughly impressed by the Kirin 810; if it had been released last year it would have been heralded as a worthy flagship chip, especially from its impressive and unexpected GPU chops.

So the Kirin 810 has earned the mid-range performance crown off the Snapdragon 730 handily; it's such a shame that many parts of the world will likely never see a phone, like Huawei's new Nova 5, actually running the Kirin 810 in light of the recent banning of the Chinese corporation across the world.

Great job Huawei/Hisilicon.
