Google begins showing more browsers and search engines to Android users in Europe 4

After some legal back-and-forth with the EU, Google got hit with a pretty hefty fine over anticompetitive behavior focused on forcing Google Search and Chrome as the default search engine/browser combo on Android devices. The European Commission didn't like Google heavy handing their own products into Android devices like that, so Google has had to take steps to make the market a little more competitive again, and we're starting to see the results.

After receiving a Play Store update in the next couple weeks, European users will start to see that screen above. It will also be shown during a new device's setup process. This screen gives users the options to download additional browsers or search engines, with the listings shown based on popularity and in a random order, and the screens will tell users how to change their default apps and how to put their new apps on the home screen.

Or, if you're happy with Chrome and Google, you can pretty effectively skip past all of this and keep using Google's products.

While I'm sure Google isn't thrilled about any of this, I think the implementation is really well done, and it opens up the gates for users to try out more apps and potentially shake up the search engine market. That's not the best thing in the world for Google, but I can't complain about giving the smaller guys a better chance to thrive.
