Google has released an incremental update for their newly rebranded Wear OS, and this time they're focusing on making the interface more swipe and gesture friendly. It's a small change, but also one that should hopefully make Wear OS a more compelling options for users and partners. It would also probably help if Google would make a Wear OS watch to show everyone their vision for the platform, but hey, small steps.
Now you'll get a few different things on your main watch face when you swipe around. Swiping right will pull up Google Assistant, while swiping left launches you into Google Fit. Swiping up brings up your notifications, and swiping down will take you to the newly redesigned Quick Settings menu where you can quickly change your playing song, access Google Pay, and more. Notifications are more swipe-friendly, too.
The plan here seems to be to make Wear OS work a little bit faster even on older, slower watches, which sounds like Google compensating for some pretty lackluster smartwatch hardware and processors. But even going forward a more lightweight OS will certainly see some benefits on a beefy processor like what Qualcomm is cooking up.
Most Wear OS watches should be eligible for this 2.1 update, so keep an eye out over the coming weeks.
