Google's Android One program began a few years ago to bring affordable handsets to emerging markets. According to a new report, the program is being absorbed by Google's new hardware division along with others.
In an interview with the Economic Times, Google’s Mike Hayes discussed the future of the Android One program. The primary goal will remain the same, however some changes will be made to speed things along. Haynes stated that manufacturers enrolled in Google's Android One program will soon have significantly more options when it comes to hardware components. This will allow manufacturers to further differentiate their products. This could ultimately lead to a wider price range among the devices in which can be bought on the program. Recently appointed Rick Osterloh is said to be one of those in charge of the new division.
The new hardware division will also supervise programs such as the Nexus program, Glass, Chromecast, OnHub, and more. Google isn't exactly who comes to mind when talking about hardware, but it's nice to see that the tech giant is open to trying. It'll be interesting to see how things change in the years ahead as the division expands.
