The CEO of T-Mobile, John Legere, has been quite open about almost everything that pertains to the mobile industry. And amidst allegations of the carrier throttling speeds of the users on its Unlimited 4G LTE data plans, he has now categorically stated that these allegations are false.

It was claimed by some users on Reddit that the carrier has throttled their speeds after surpassing about 20GB of usage. On the same Reddit post, some T-Mobile employees came in defence of the carrier suggesting that throttling only happens if there is increased traffic on its towers.

To summarize, these employees suggested that in a scenario where there was a lot of data traffic, the carrier automatically prioritizes speeds to users who have spent lesser amount of data that month. While this makes sense, it doesn't seem fair to the customers, especially when they were promised that data speeds will not be throttled.

Are you facing similiar issues with the carrier's Unlimited 4G LTE plans? Let us know. In the meanwhile, you can catch Legere's statement on the entire issue made during the earning's call from the video below.

  1. I just hit 20GB yesterday and my service came to a screeching halt. After about 5 hours of data-less service, I was able to browse the web again. This happened during peak hours. Coincidence?
Then there was a new notification that my data exceeded 20GB. So, METROPCS may not call it ‘throttling’, but they are ‘limiting’ my service after 20GB to give other users priority. I guess the difference is that throttle plans limit your data 24hours/day after you reached your limit. Makes sense.

  2. Explain to me how if traffic on the towers is too much for the company to handle, why does is the only time I see a reduction in service After I use 20gb in a given month. All month long the traffic would be the same, busier at night probably but not my a huge amount because there are still tons of people at home in the day time who might work nights or are mothers raising families. It sounds like bullshit to me.

I pay for unlimited service, but I am throttled every month after 20gb to unusable speeds. It simply makes no sense. No one is complaining of poor service ordinarily, Only when their data is throttled. That doesn’t sound funny? If service isn’t suffering the first two weeks why deprioritize me the second two weeks?

This is with MetroPCS. I keep looking for lawsuits as I think Sprint has one pending against them. Yes metro tells they throttle you, in small print and I had to find it on my own, but it seems like just a scam to punish us for knowing how to use the internet for what it’s made for. Hands in other people’s pockets, make us pay for cable internet at home or whatever.

  3. I have had metro pcs for a year and i pay for unlimited plan 4g on 22nd of every month exactly on the 20th day of my 30 day plan my data slows down so on the 12th day of the next month it slows it is frustrating and a scam

  4. I been with T mobile since 2005. I hated when my data is throttle. It seem like T mobile are pushing their customers to pay more to get more high speed data. A friend recommend Metro PCS. She claimed Metro PCS do not throttle data. I believe Metro PCS do throttle.

  5. Metro PCS merged with t-mobile few months ago and now on my 4GB plan on my phone becomes practically useless at 2GB They’re saying that I’m using 4GB and my phone is consistently sending out a data warning usage text just after 2GBs has been used and its usually within the second week of the usage the cycle. NEVER had this problem before with Metro.

  6. I am experiencing a weird phenomenon on Metro PCS/ Tmobile .
I am on Metro PCS Unlimited Plan and have slow data( great Voice Quality though )on my Factory Unlocked Alpha 850M so playing with the APN and GID settings etc.
In strong LTE areas I will get a 15 to 20 mps speed but only for a minute or two- then drops to 5 to 7 mps in a minute or two then as low as 2 mps.
Something will not let my Data remain high speed …
Then I can often change APN Settings and speed goes up but only for a minute or 2, then back down again to 7 then maybe 2 or 3 mps..

Is this the Computer kicking in with a throttled speed ?
I am trying to get a steady 5 to 8 mps but more would be nice…lol.
Not a huge user …but fairly high.

  7. i just switched to t mobile in february and i had att for 5yrs and was grandfathered in to unlimited just this january i had enough of being throttled and was paying for unlimited but not getting what i payed for of course and so i switched to t-mobile and before i did the paper work i asked about throttling and the guy guarnteed no throttle and i will have my unlimited lte speeds and i have been promised so far and im happy. first month i used 53gb and second month i did 41gb so yea im happy and as long as im paying t mobile i expect to have my data at full speeds. i also live in florida lakeland area and had no issue.

  8. I have just surpassed the 20gb mark and the speed of my data have been reduced. I have the unlimited 4gLTE data plan. I live in Los Angeles California.

  9. Here in Central Florida, at Altamonte Springs we have been experiencing data slow down. I called customer service and they could not give me an answer but that possible tower issue. I use data alot from Pandora to viewing youtube….

  10. I use in average 80 gb on my tmobile unlimited plan. This works for me because I have no WiFi options available to me. I stream Netflix Pandora everything. I’m no data hog, I’m using it like I do because it’s truly unlimited, if people can’t afford it and say things like data hogs, that’s not our fault. It’s unlimited for a reason and we pay just like everyone else. And yes I do get throttled every now and then but just call tmobile support and they fix it.

    1. 80 gig a month and you claim not to be a data hog. Normal users like me subsidize data hogs like you. Is it possibly tmobile’s fault. Yes, but read your agreement closely. Unlimited doesn’t actually mean infinity of data use.

  11. If you’re using more than 20 GB of data per month through a mobile device, maybe you’re a data hog. Would you like some free lunch too? Someone is paying extra for the data hogs. It’s the pay-as-you-go customers like me.

    1. Or not, since if T-Mobile felt that way they would offer 20GB/month plans like MetroPCS, not UNLIMITED. FWIW I don’t experience throttling at all. Not even going to mention my usage because I don’t feel like dealing with comments from dick heads.

      1. T-Mobile offers unlimited plans to get customers that it wouldn’t get otherwise, and the business model is that most customers who sign up aren’t data hogs. There will be a few data hogs like you, however, and those people increase the overall cost of service for others. There is a cost for bandwidth, and you are not paying for what you are using, so someone else pays for it, or it gets built into some other aspect of the charges.
